Augusta Lynx News Release
DULUTH, GA - Riku Helenius made 44 saves in his first career pro game and Matt Auffrey forced overtime, scoring the game tying goal with just 31 seconds left as the Lynx defeated the Gwinnett Gladiators 3-2 in a shootout at The Arena at Gwinnett Center on Tuesday night.
Aaron Slattengren, Auffrey and Art Femenella scored in the shootout for the Lynx as Helenius stonewalled three Gwinnett shooters to notch the victory.
The Gladiators had two one-goal leads in the game but could not hold on. Gwinnett took advantage of a first period power play as Jordan Fox found a loose puck and fired it past Helenius to give the Gladiators a 1-0 lead with 3:04 left in the period. The Lynx responded with a power play goal of their own. With 1:07 left in the first, Captain Aaron Slattengren beat Gladiators net minder Kevin Nastiuk to tie the game at one.
Gwinnett went back ahead late in the second as Jeff Prough got credit for the goal after the puck deflected into the net to make it 2-1 Gladiators after two periods of play.
Auffrey received a perfect pass from Slattengren to tie the game late in the third. Both teams played a scoreless overtime until the Lynx dominated the shootout. The Lynx were out shot in the game 46-30. Augusta shut down Gwinnett on seven of eight power play chances while going 1 for 5 on the man advantage.
The Lynx head North as Augusta visits Elmira and Reading this weekend. The first game of the three game road trip is on Friday night at 7:35 p.m. against the Elmira Jackals.
The Lynx return to James Brown Arena on Friday, November 7 to take on the Charlotte Checkers at 7:30 p.m. for Support the Troops and NASCAR Night. Show cars from Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt, Sr. will be on hand. Season tickets, group tickets, and birthday packages are all available by calling the Lynx at 706-724-4423 or by logging onto www.augustalynx.com.
