
Checkers Jakaitis Named Goalie Of The Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Jeff Jakaitis of the Charlotte Checkers is the Rbk Hockey ECHL Goaltender of the Week for Oct. 17-19.
The 25-year-old netminder made 35 saves, including stopping the last 20 shots he faced, in a 3-1 win on Saturday at Florida.
The 5-foot-10 and 165-pound Jakaitis played as a rookie last season with Columbia where he was 12-14-6 with two shutouts, a goals-against average of 2.92 and a save percentage of .909 in 36 regular season games.
Prior to turning professional the Rochester, Minn. native played three seasons at Lake Superior State University where he was 35-48-14 with seven shutouts, a goals-against average of 2.44 and a save percentage of .923 in 100 games.
Also, head coach and general manager of the Charlotte Checkers, Derek Wilkinson announced today that forward Sean McMorrow has been loaned to the Rockford IceHogs of the American Hockey League.
McMorrow, 6-foot-4, 225 pounds was drafted during the eighth round of the 2000 NHL draft by the Buffalo Sabers. The Vancouver, B.C. native played four seasons in the AHL for the Rochester Americans dressing in 220 games scoring four goals and four assists for eight points with 1020 penalty minutes. The previous two seasons were spent in the LNAH with St. Hyacinthe Top Design where he skated in 68 games compiling two goals and five assists for seven points with an impressive 693 penalty minutes with 527 of those minutes collected last season. He hasn't suited up yet this season for the Checkers.
The Checkers are getting ready for their 16th season of play as a member of the ECHL. Opening night will take place on Halloween against the Augusta Lynx at a special 8 p.m. start. In the team's 15-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 11 times including four consecutive playoff appearances to date.
