LumberKings Drop Fifth in a Row, Fall to Dayton 8-2

June 3, 2015 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - Following a four game sweep at the hands of the wild card leading Cedar Rapids Kernels, the six game homestand for the Clinton LumberKings (23-30) got off to a poor start, as Tyler Herb (L, 2-2) allowed five earned runs over 4.2 innings and the home team fell to the visiting Dayton Dragons (28-25) 8-2.

Clinton avoided a second consecutive shutout on a bases loaded wild pitch, which coupled with an error by Dayton catcher Jose Ortiz, plated two runs in the eighth inning off of reliever Jake Paulson. Both runs were unearned, as the Dragons lowered their team ERA to 2.76.

Dayton starter Tyler Mahle (W, 5-3) surrendered only two hits and allowed a total of four base runners over seven shutout innings. After he hit Taylor Zeutenhorst with a pitch with two outs in the second inning, he retired 15 consecutive Clinton hitters before Joe DeCarlo singled to left field with two outs in the seventh. Mahle recorded eight strikeouts, and has at least eight in four starts, and three of his past four.

The Dragons took the lead vs. Herb with three straight hits that began the second inning. An RBI double by Luis Gonzalez made it 1-0 Dayton, while Ortiz followed with an RBI double of his own, as the Dragons led 2-0 after 1.5 innings.

Herb wiggled out of trouble in multiple innings, as he induced three double plays, but surrendered three more runs in the fifth, all with two outs. After a two-out walk to Paul Kronenfeld put runners on first and third, Avain Rachal plated two runs with his first of two doubles on the night. Gavin LaValley followed with an RBI single that closed the door on Herb's night.

Out of the bullpen, Osmer Morales provided his third consecutive scoreless outing of more than an inning. The Venezuelan righty retired all seven men that he faced. In the eighth inning, Jarrett Brown loaded the bases with no outs, and after he retired two men, the lefty surrendered a three run home run to Narciso Crook that capped Dayton's offensive outburst.

With the two-run eighth inning, Clinton snapped a 21 inning scoreless streak, which dated back to the sixth inning of the May 31st game in Cedar Rapids. Dayton went 6-14 with RISP in the victory, and eight runs scored was the most Dayton had scored since a 14-1 victory over West Michigan on May 23rd.

The LumberKings will look to snap a season high five game losing streak Thursday night at Ashford University Field. First pitch in Clinton is scheduled for 6:30 CT. The LumberKings radio broadcast can be heard on WCCI 100.3 FM, WCCIRadio.com, and LumberKings.com.
