Great Lakes Loons News Release

MIDLAND, Mich. - During what turned out to be on offensive struggle for both teams, the Great Lakes Loons were patient, poised and eventually broke through, claiming a confidence-gaining victory to open a six-game homestand.

After his team battled through three and a half scoreless innings, Loons second baseman Kelvin Ramos slapped an RBI base hit down the left field line during the bottom of the 7th inning to give Great Lakes a 3-2 lead and eventual win over the Peoria Chiefs on Monday at Dow Diamond.

The lead-earning double was made possible by back-to-back two-out base hits by Great Lakes seven and eight hitters Jacob Scavuzzo and Michael Ahmed. It was a perfect time for Ramos to notch his 16th run batted in and eighth double of the season.

"I was just looking to make contact and score that run," Ramos said. "It's really good when you get the guys in front of you getting hits like that, so it helps a lot."

The Loons got on the scoreboard early thanks two a two-run 1st inning, during which a wild pitch by Chiefs starting pitcher Matt Pearce allowed right fielder Alex Verdugo to score. During the next at bat, first baseman Josmar Cordero managed to hit a fly ball deep enough to score centerfielder Johan Mieses as the Loons took a 2-0 lead.

"Our pitchers did a really nice job tonight," said Loons interim manager Robert Fick. "(Peoria)'s pitcher started off really well and we were able to scrape a couple runs across off of him. (The hitters) did a really good job."

Cordero hit another RBI fly out during the bottom of the 8th inning, adding some insurance to the lead and giving the Loons a 4-2 advantage.

Great Lakes starter Brandon Martinez was efficient allowing just four hits and three walks during his five innings pitched. Nick Thompson tied the game for the Chiefs during the bottom of the 3rd inning with a two-out RBI double.

Loons reliever Roberth Fernandez entered the game in the 6th inning allowed just two hits during two innings pitched and earned the win. Pearce took the loss for Peoria.

Despite allowing Peoria to load the bases in the top of the 9th inning, Loons closer Kyle Hooper stymied a Chiefs comeback and earned the save.

Game two of the three-game series is Thursday night at Dow Diamond. The Loons send reliever-turned starter Joe Broussard to the mound. Broussard is 3-1 this season with a 2.95 earned run average. Luis Perdomo will take the mound for Peoria. He is 2-4 this season with a 1.48 ERA.

Thursday is $1 Family Feast Night presented by Chemical Bank at Dow Diamond. Hot dogs, 16 oz. Pepsi fountain products, ice cream sandwiches and Better Made Chips are all on sale for just $1.

The Great Lakes Loons are a ninth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers. For tickets and more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com, or call 989-837-BALL.
