Snappers Win in Style: Munoz Leads Comeback

June 3, 2015 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Beloit Sky Carp News Release

The Snappers came all the way back from a 7-1 early deficit to beat the Fort Wayne TinCaps 8-7 in the bottom of the ninth on a Yairo Munoz single to right field.

Dustin Driver made his return from the DL on a warm night in Beloit, but the righty only made it through two innings, giving up five runs, and leaving a bases-loaded jam for Kevin Johnson in the top of the third. The Snappers got a run in the bottom of the first, but it was all TinCaps until the fireworks in the ninth.

Fort Wayne took an early 1-0 lead after a Ruddy Giron single and stolen base which drew a wild throw from Jose Chavez allowing the runner to take third. Franchy Cordero then opened the scoring with an RBI single to right. The Snappers answered with a run in the bottom of the first on a balk from Fort Wayne pitcher Jose Castillo, tying the game at 1-1.

Errors continued to cause problems for the Snappers as Michael Gettys reached when Sandber Pimentel dropped Munoz's throw from the hole at shortstop. Gettys then scored on a Jose Ruiz groundout after stealing second base and moving up to third on a Chase Jensen ground out. Despite their efforts to claw their way back into the game, the Snappers trailed the entire game after falling behind 2-1 in the second.

Kevin Johnson came on to relieve the struggling Driver in the third, but Trae Santos turned around a mistake pitch to blow the game open with a grand slam to left center field, giving the TinCaps a 6-1 lead. Three of the five runs in the inning would be charged to Driver who falls to 0-2 with a 10.00 ERA.

Johnson then gave up a solo shot to Gettys, and Fort Wayne led 7-1 going into the bottom of the third inning. The TinCaps needed a shutdown inning, but Munoz made sure that didn't happen by hitting his sixth homerun of the year, scoring three and bringing the Snappers to within striking distance once again. Johnson got through a scoreless fourth, and the Snappers continued to chip away with a run in the bottom of the inning on a Jose Chavez RBI single to right field. After four innings, Fort Wayne led Beloit 7-5.

The TinCaps threatened in the seventh and eighth, but the Snappers bullpen was able to hold them off as the teams traded zeroes until the bottom of the ninth when Chavez walked, James Harris singled to left, and Trent Gilbert brought them both in with a double to the wall in left field. Munoz then bounced a grounder through the right side of the infield and the Snappers won in walk-off fashion 8-7. Beloit reliever Joey Wagman got the win, and Seth Lucio got the loss for Fort Wayne.

The Snappers are 23-30 on the season and play the Fort Wayne TinCaps again tomorrow at 7:00 PM. To buy tickets, stop by the office or call (608) 362-2272. Stay tuned to www.snappersbaseball.com and the Snappers' Facebook and Twitter accounts for all up to date news.
