Bridgewater, New Jersey - Luis Medina struck out a career-high 12 batters as the Somerset Patriots (58-40) defeated the Akron RubberDucks (60-38) 7-3 before 5,815 fans at TD Bank Ballpark on Thursday night.

Oswaldo Cabrera got the scoring started with a solo home run (17) in the first.

Medina then cruised along until the fifth inning when Clark Scolamiero hit a two-run home run (2) to gain the lead. The hard-throwing Medina scattered three hits in his 5.1 innings of work in a no-decision.

Somerset took the lead in the sixth on Dermis' Garcia's two-run shot (25) and extended it further on a wild pitch followed by an Isiah Gilliam three-run blast (8) in the eighth.

Jose Fermin hit a solo home run (3) in the ninth for the 7-3 final.

Jefry Valdez (W, 3-1) earned the win with 2.2 scoreless innings of relief. Ben Krauth (L, 1-1) took the loss after he allowed two runs on two hits in 1.1 innings pitched.

Somerset continues its six-game series against Akron on Friday night. First pitch at TD Bank Ballpark is set for 7:05 p.m.
