Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING- It took until the final at-bat, but the Lansing Lugnuts finally cracked the scoreboard against South Bend in Sunday afternoons affair. Luckily for Lansing, it was also the only run of the game. Raul Barron's RBI single in the ninth inning lifted the Lugnuts to a 1-0 win over the SilverHawks before 1,901 fans at Oldsmobile Park.
Each team's pitching staff had escaped several jams in the game, but the Lugnuts were able to rally in the final frame. Jonathan Baksh beat out an infield single and moved to second base when Jonathan Jaspe drew a walk. After Sean Shoffit laid down a sacrifice bunt to put runners at second and third, Chris Emaunele was issued an intentional walk to bring up Barron. Barron then roped a single just inside the line in left field to plate Baksh for the win.
Baksh made a key defensive play in the eighth inning when he threw Tyler Jones out at home from right field to keep the game scoreless. The Lugnuts also mowed Jones down at the plate in the third when he tried to score from first base on a double.
Lansing escaped two dangerous situations in the late innings, as South Bend put a runner at third base with no men out twice in the finale three frames, but failed to bring a man home each time.
The Lugnuts also had a few chances to score runs earlier in the contest, including the seventh inning when they left the bases loaded.
Each team received a terrific performance from its starting pitcher, although neither one of the men factored into the decision. Lansing's Ray Gonzalez lasted six innings and gave up just three hits, while the SilverHawks' Tony Barnette went seven frames and scattered five hits.
With the win, Lansing (32-28) was able to earn a split of the four game series with South Bend (31-32). The Lugnuts will now host the Dayton Dragons beginning Monday night, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
