Peoria Chiefs News Release

Clinton, IA - The Peoria Chiefs were officially eliminated from playoff contention with an 8-6 loss Sunday afternoon against the Clinton Lumberkings. With seven games left in the half, the Chiefs are 30-32 while first place Beloit already has 38 wins and the Chiefs are now eight games behind Clinton for the Wild Card.

The Chiefs wasted little time getting things going against lefty Mike Ballard. Matt Camp led off with an infield single but was caught stealing by Ballard between first and second. Clinton born infielder Ryne Malone homered for the second time this series for a 1-0 lead and Josh Lansford singled into right. Russ Canlzler followed with a single into right-center and Ryan Norwood singled to right. Right-fielder KC Herren misplayed Norwood's hit allowing Lansford to score for a 2-0 lead. Ballard induced a nicely turned 6-4-3 double play off the bat of Yusuf Carter to end the first inning.

Marco Carrillo pitched around a one-out error with two on in the second. In the third, he allowed a one-out single to Marcus Lemon before Jose Vallejo bounced into a fielders' choice. Carrillo appeared to have a inning ending strikeout of John Whittleman with a tight 1-2 curveball but didn't get the call. Whittleman crushed the next pitch over the rightcenter field wall for a game tying two-run homer, his 11th of the season and second of the series.

Clinton broke the game wide open as they batted around in the fourth. Mauro Gomez and Manny Pina started the inning with back to back singles. After a walk by Carrillo loaded the bases, David Paisano gave the home team a 3-2 lead with a RBI fielders' choice. Lemon made it 4-2 with a single to right. After another walk and a strikeout, Chad Tracy doubled in a pair to give the Lumberkings a 6-2 lead.

Clinton added to their lead in the fifth against reliever Brad Clipp. With one out, Pina and Wally Backman reached on back to back bloop singles. After a strikeout, Lemon singled home his second run of the day for a 7-2 lead. Whittleman connected on a leadoff homer against Clipp in the sixth to push the lead to 8-2. The homer was his second of the game and 12th of the season.

Peoria knocked Ballard from the game in the seventh with a one out walk and an error. Tim Gudex came out of the Clinton bullpen and retired Dylan Johnston before Jim Adduci collected a RBI single to right to cut the lead to 8-3. Peoria hit Gudex hard in the eighth as Lansford singled, Canzler reached on a fielders' choice and Norwood singled. Carter blasted a three-run shot to left for an 8-6 ballgame. The homer was Carter's second of the series and team leading seventh of the season.

Carrillo threw 101 pitches and allowed six hits and six runs over four innings. He walked four and struck out five while allowing a homer. Clipp allowed two runs on four hits over three innings. He surrendered a homer and struck out three in his second outing of the season. Oscar Bernard threw a perfect eighth inning.

Gorman's Pub Player of the Game Yusuf Carter (RF) - Carter homered for the second day in a row and also picked up his team leading 5th triple. He finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and a walk.
