Mateo Heads to DL, Chiefs add RHP Maradeo

Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs in conjunction with the Chicago Cubs have announced that RHP Juan Mateo who spent part of the 2006 season with the Cubs is headed to the 7-day minor league disabled list with a shoulder injury. The move is retroactive to Friday June 8 meaning Mateo can come off the DL on Friday June 15. The Chiefs will add RHP Matt Maradeo from extended spring training.

Mateo made one start, Sunday June 3rd, losing at home against Beloit. In that outing he allowed four runs on six hits over just three innings of work. He has been sidelined since with the shoulder injury. Mateo will stay with the Chiefs while he undergoes treatment and is expected to throw a bullpen session early in the week and his return is tentatively scheduled for next weekend against the Clinton Lumberkings at O'Brien Field.

The 24-year old Mateo made 11 appearances last year with the Cubs, 10 of which were starts. He made his first major league start on August 3rd against Arizona where he became the first Cubs starter since John Kornoka to win his first Major League start. He threw five innings against the Diamondbacks while allowing two earned runs and striking out two in a 7-3 victory.

In his 10 major league starts he has worked at least six innings two times and seven innings once. Juan also had three consecutive starts in September where he allowed two or less earned runs. He had a 1.93 ERA and held opposing hitters to a .170 batting average over that span. He finished the '06 season with a 1-3 mark with a 5.32 ERA.

Mateo made the jump from AA to the Cubs in just his fifth professional season. While at AA West Tennessee in 2006 he went 7-4 with a 2.82 ERA in 18 games. Juan spent the 2005 season with High-A Daytona where he went 10-5 and set career highs in innings pitched (109.1), starts (16) and strikeouts (123).

Maradeo was signed as a non-drafted free agent in May of 2006 and has not pitched yet in 2007. The sidearming right-hander joined the Chiefs in Clinton and will be available for Sunday's 2:00 PM series finale. He made 12 appearances for Mesa in the Arizona Rookie League last season going 1-1 with a save and a 10.24 ERA. In 19 1/3 innings he struck out 14 and walked just six but allowed 31 hits and a .369 opponents average against. The Pennsylvania native will turn 24 in three weeks and is a graduate of Panther Valley High School in Nesquehoning, PA. He also attended Kutztown University in Pennsylvania.
