Kernels Streak Snapped at Six With 2-0 Loss to Swing

June 10, 2007 - Quad Cities pitchers Tyler Herron and Brad Furnish combined to hold the Kernels to four hits as the Swing of the Quad Cities snapped the Cedar Rapids Kernels six game winning streak with a 2-0 win on Sunday afternoon at John O'Donnell Stadium.

Herron (6-4) allowed three hits and struck out three over six innings to get the win and Furnish allowed the Kernels a single hit and struck out four over the final three innings to earn his second save of the season.

Kernels starter Vladimir Veras (0-1) allowed a run on six hits over five innings to take the loss. He walked one and struck out three in his second start for the Kernels.

Stantrel Smith had two of the Kernels four hits, going 2 for 3 with a stolen base. Julio Perez and Abel Nieves each had a single to complete the Kernel offense.

The loss drops the Kernels to 35-25 in the first half and at least three games behind league-leader Beloit in the MWL Western Division standings. Quad Cities improves to 35-27 and are now one game behind the Kernels for third place.

The Kernels now head to Beloit for an important six-game, four-day series with the Snappers that includes doubleheaders on Monday and Wednesday. Cedar Rapids returns home to Veterans Memorial Stadium on Friday, June 15th to host Wisconsin in the final three games of the first half of the 2007 season.

RHP Trevor Bell will start game 1 in Beloit at 5 pm on Monday with LHP Doug Brandt scheduled to start game 2.
