Bees Get Swept by Snappers

Beloit, WI (June 10, 2007) - The Beloit Snappers (39-22) scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to come from behind and beat the Burlington Bees (25-37) 7-5 at Pohlman Field this afternoon and complete a four-game sweep of the series. The Bees' losing streak extends to seven games and the team drops to a season-low twelve games under .500.

The Bees scored the first run in the top of the third inning against Snappers' starter Cole Devries. With one out, Jeremy Jirschele singled, moved to third on a double by Derrick Robinson, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Chris McConnell. The lead didn't last long as the Snappers responded with a run in the bottom of the third against Tyler Chambliss, making his first start of the season for the Bees. With two outs, Brian Dinkelman doubled and scored on a base hit by Wilson Ramos.

The Snappers took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. With one out, Joe Benson hit a slow bouncer to third for an infield single and when Kurt Mertins' throw sailed wide down the right field line, Benson raced all the way to third. Danny Santiesteban singled to drive in Benson for a 2-1 lead. After a bunt moved Santiesteban to second, Greg Yersich brought him in with a single to center and went to second on the throw to the plate. Dinkelman finished the rally with a double to drive in Yersich for a 4-1 Snappers' lead.

The Bees came back in the top of the fifth. Jirschele led off with his second base hit, Robinson lined his second double, and McConnell was hit by a pitch to load the bases. After a popout, Michael Thompson blasted a grand slam to left to put the Bees back on top at 5-4. It was the Bees' first grand slam since August 15, 2005 when Brian McFall slammed one against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. The homer was Thompson's second of the series and his twelfth of the season. He is now tied for second in the Midwest League with Juan Francisco of Dayton.

Chambliss turned the ball over to Josh Cribb for the bottom of the fifth inning. Cribb pitched two scoreless innings before running into trouble in the seventh. With two outs and a man on first, Danny Valencia walked and Chris Parmalee doubled off the wall in left to drive in two and put the Snappers on top 6-5. Benson followed with another single that brought in Parmalee with the final insurance run. Cribb (1-5) would finish the eighth as well, but get the loss.

Devries came out after five. Jesus Carnavales pitched a scoreless inning for the Snappers. Matt Fox pitched a scoreless seventh, but didn't get through the eighth. Two singles and a wild pitch had runners on second and third with two outs when the Snappers brought in Rob Delaney. Delaney ended the threat by fanning Robinson and then finished off the ninth for his 20th save despite allowing a base hit to McConnell and a double to Dickerson. Fox (3-0) picked up the win.

The Bees return home tomorrow night to take on the Peoria Chiefs in a four game series that will be split between the teams' home ballparks. RH Ed Cegarra (0-0, 16.20) will make his first start for the Bees against RH Miguel Cuevas (0-0, 2.70) for the Chiefs. Game time is 7:00 and the gates will open at 6:00 for Dollar Monday sponsored by Miller Lite and The Mix 107.3. General admission tickets, hot dogs, pizza, popcorn, and cans of Pepsi products are all $1. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
