Rattlers Suffer Eighth Straight Loss

GRAND CHUTE, WI -- The Kane County Cougars defeated the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 8-6 Sunday afternoon on Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The Wisconsin defense committed four errors and those fielding miscues led to five unearned runs for the Cougars. Jermaine Mitchell and Sammy Hernandez each had two hits and two RBI to pace the Cougar offense. Trevor Cahill struck out a career high eight batters over five innings for the win.

The Cougars (20-42) scored first in the fourth straight game of the series by plating an unearned run in the top of the first inning. Larry Cobb was at second base with one out and Mitchell sent a high chopper that was fielded cleanly near the second base bag by shortstop Juan Diaz. However, the throw to first was wild and Cobb scored.

Wisconsin (17-44) took their first lead of the series with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning. Gerardo Avila tripled in a run to tie the game. A wild pitch by Cahill sent Avila across the plate for a 2-1 Wisconsin lead.

But, in the top of the third inning, Kane County scored five times to go back in front. Cobb started the inning with a single, stole second, and went to third on a wild pitch. An RBI single by Mitchell tied the game. Later in the inning and with two runners on base, Michael Affronti sent a dribbler in front of the plate. Rattler catcher Jair Fernandez threw wildly to first and both baserunners scored as Affronti wound up on third base. After a walk to David Castillo, Sammy Hernandez drilled a two-run double and the Cougars were up 6-2.

Then, it was Wisconsin's turn to claw back into the game. Back-to-back two-out RBI singles by Kalian Sams and Ogui Diaz in the bottom of the fourth pulled the Rattlers to within 6-4.

Cobb singled in a run to put Kane County up 7-4 in the fifth inning.

Wisconsin scored single runs in the fifth and sixth to cut the Kane County lead to 7-6. Avila doubled in a run in the fifth. Sams drove a pitch to the centerfield wall to lead off the sixth and raced around the bases with an inside-the-park home run.

But, Kane County answered back with an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Mitchell's RBI fielder's choice made the score 8-6.

The game settled down after that run. Cougar closer Scott Moore set down the Rattlers in order in the bottom of the ninth for his eighth save.

The Rattlers conclude the first half of the 2007 season with a seven game road trip. Game one of the trip is Monday against the Swing of the Quad Cities in Davenport, Iowa. Tony Butler (0-6, 7.02) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Eddie Degerman (0-1, 2.43) is set to start for Quad Cities. Game time at John O'Donnell Stadium is 7:00pm.
