Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The Swing of the Quad Cities pitching staff continued to deal on Sunday afternoon at John O'Donnell Stadium, leading the home team to a 2-0 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels. The victory snapped a three-game losing streak and prevented a series sweep, keeping the Swing in the playoff mix with just seven games remaining in the first half.
Quad Cities (35-27) got stellar pitching from tandem starters Tyler Herron and Brad Furnish, who allowed just one baserunner to advance past first base and combined on a four-hit shutout. Cedar Rapids (35-25) had their six-game winning streak come to an end, taking three of four from the Swing despite managing just four runs over the final three games of the series.
The contest was scoreless heading into the middle innings for the third game in a row, but the Swing struck first in the bottom of the fifth. Daryl Jones opened the inning with his third hit of the game - a single to center - and promptly stole second. He was at third base when Chris Grossman delivered a two-out knock, lining a single up the middle for a 1-0 lead.
Quad Cities added their second run in the bottom of the sixth, sparked by Luke Gorsett's leadoff double. Men were at the corners with one away when Willian Sandoval pulled a squeeze bunt down the first base line, plating Gorsett from third to push the advantage to 2-0.
That was plenty for Herron (6-4), who picked up his sixth consecutive win with six scoreless, three-hit innings of work. After losing his first four decisions of the season, the 20-year-old prospect from Florida has rebounded to go 6-0 with a 1.49 ERA and 38 strikeouts over his last eight appearances.
Furnish picked up where Herron left off, tossing the final three frames for his second save of the year. The southpaw out of Texas Christian University retired nine of the 10 batters that he faced with four strikeouts.
