Kane County Cougars News Release

APPLETON, Wisc. - The Kane County Cougars shifted their season-high winning streak to five games Sunday afternoon after an 8-6 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at Time Warner Cable Field. Trevor Cahill picked up his second win, and Sammy Hernandez and Jermaine Mitchell each drove in two as the Cougars posted their first four-game sweep of the season.

The Cougars trailed 2-1 in the third when they turned the game around, scoring five times and sending nine men to the plate. Mitchell singled to plate Larry Cobb, Todd Johnson drove in a run and reached on an error that also allowed Mike Affronti to score. Then with runners at the corners, Sammy Hernandez smashed a two-out, two-run double to make it 6-2.

Cahill (2-1) yielded two fourth-inning tallies and an unearned run in the fifth before departing. The 19-year-old gave up five runs -- four earned -- on eight hits, walked two and set a new career-high with eight strikeouts. Derrick Gordon handled the next three innings and allowed one run, and Scott Moore pitched a perfect ninth for his eighth save in 10 chances. Varvaro (3-7) took the loss. Cobb's RBI single in the eighth and a run-scoring fielder's choice by Mitchell in the seventh accounted for the other Kane County runs.

The Cougars (20-42) continue their six-game road trip Monday night at 7 CDT when they play the Clinton LumberKings. Scott Deal (3-4, 4.88) will toe the rubber against Kasey Kiker (1-1, 3.18).
