Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release

Bowling Green, Ky. - The Bowling Green Hot Rods (Class-A/Tampa Bay Rays) made the long trek from Eastlake, Ohio to return home for a short series against the Lansing Lugnuts (Toronto Blue Jays) on Monday night, but the Lugnuts proved rude guests as they won the series opener, 11-4.

A two-run first inning set the tone for Lansing. With two outs, Mitch Nay forced a broken-bat single to center field. He would try and move to second on a pitch in the dirt, but the throw from Oscar Hernandez went into centerfield. After it was misplayed as well in the outfield, Nay scored. L.B. Dantzler then drew a walk. He advanced to second on a passed ball, and scored when Dawel Lugo singled him home.

The Lugnut lead was extended in the second inning when D.J. Davis hit a two-run home run. That lead was further stretched by five Lugnut runs in the fourth. With the bases loaded, Derrick Loveless hit a two-run single to left field to plate Chaz Frank and Dickie Joe Thon. With Loveless and Davis aboard, Nay then capped the inning with a three-run home run to left-center field. Lansing led 9-0 after three and a half innings.

The Hot Rods got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Armando Araiza drew a lead-off walk, and moved to second on a passed ball. Later on, a grounder moved Araiza to third base, and Alexander Simon drove him home with a hard-single to right field.

Bowling Green brought back two more runs in the fifth. Kean Wong led off with frame with a single, and he quickly advanced to second after a Johnny Field hit. One out later, Granden Goetzman slapped one of his three hits into left field to drive home Wong. A grounder moved Field to third base, and he would score on a groundout by Hernandez. The lead was trimmed to 9-3.

Lansing would not let up, as they added another in the seventh on a bases-loaded walk to Nay. Their offensive night was capped when Loveless clubbed a home run to right field. The Hot Rods would force home one run in the eighth when Yoel Araujo drove home Pat Blair with a sacrifice fly, but it was not enough in the 11-4 series-opening defeat.

Jake Faria (2-2) entered with an earned run average that ranked sixth in the Midwest League. He experienced his roughest outing of the season in the loss. Shane Dawson (1-1) earned the win for Lansing after relieving starter Alberto Tirado in the fourth inning.

The Hot Rods will try and even the series in game two of a three-game set at Bowling Green Ballpark on Tuesday night. Fans will want to get to the ballpark early for T-Shirt Tuesday, and gates will open at 6 p.m. Chris Kirsch (2-4, 5.52) ascends the mound for the Hot Rods, and he'll be opposed by Matt Dermody (1-0, 3.72). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
