Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Bowling Green, Ky. - For the second straight night, the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Class-A/Tampa Bay Rays) were unable to overcome the Lansing Lugnuts (Toronto Blue Jays). Lansing built an early lead before sealing it with a five-run final frame to beat the Hot Rods at Bowling Green Ballpark, 10-0. Matt Dermody spun eight shutout innings for the Lugnuts, and he did so on only 82 pitches.
Dermody (2-0) allowed just four hits, and struck out six batters while inducing 14 groundball outs to just one fly-ball out. He issued just one free pass en route to his second win of the season.
Dawel Lugo commenced the scoring in the fourth when he led off the inning with a solo home run.
The Lugnut lead was extended by three runs in the fourth. Justin Atkinson led off with a walk, and D.J. Davis followed with his a two-run home run over the right-center field blast. It was Davis' second two-run homer in as many games. Dickie Joe Thon followed the long ball up with a double. After advancing to third, Thon scored on a single by Lugo.
The sixth inning saw one run race across for Lansing to stretch their lead to 5-0. With one out, Santiago Nessy singled to left field. A wild pitch would later plate him to complete the inning.
A big ninth-inning gave the game its final margin. Three consecutive singles loaded the bases, and Derrick Loveless was hit by a pitch to force in a run. Jason Leblebijian then singled home one run, and Nessy capped the inning with a bases-clearing double to push the Lugnut advantage to 10-0.
Chris Kirsch (2-5) started the game for Bowling Green and took the loss. He allowed four runs on seven hits before being lifted in the fifth inning.
The Hot Rods will try to avoid the sweep on Wednesday morning in the series finale with Lansing. First pitch is 10:35 a.m. on a Meijer Wednesday. Fans can purchase tickets for just half-price thanks to Meijer. Gates will open at Bowling Green Ballpark at 9:30 a.m.
