Chiefs Sweep Kernels in First of Two Doubleheaders

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - The Peoria Chiefs swept both games of a doubleheader from the Kernels on Tuesday at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The two teams will meet for another doubleheader on Wednesday evening at 5:05 p.m.

Peoria won the opener 4-3 after rallying from a deficit with a three-run fifth inning. The Kernels had previously scored three in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a brief lead. In game two, the Chiefs used a five-run third inning to complete the sweep with a 6-4 win.

In the opener, pitching defined the early innings of the game. Chiefs starting pitcher Alex Reyes was hitless through his first three frames, and Kernels starter Ethan Mildren gave up just five hits through his first four innings on the mound.

Peoria tallied an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning after Kenny Peoples-Walls drove in Juan Herrera on a fielder's choice to shortstop.

The Kernels collected their only hits and runs in the fourth inning to take a 3-1 lead. Jason Kanzler hit a two-out, two-run double to the center field wall that brought Chad Christensen and Bryan Haar across the plate. Kanzler would later score after stealing third base and advancing home on a Peoria throwing error.

The Chiefs would answer back in the top of the fifth with three runs of their own on three doubles to take a 4-3 advantage. Carson Kelly brought in Herrera on a one-out double and would later score on an RBI single by Peoples-Walls. Cesar Valera brought in the third Peoria run on a two-out double into right field.

Ethan Mildren (0-2) exited for Cedar Rapids after five innings of work. The starter allowed four runs on 10 hits while striking out two and walking one. Alex Muren pitched two scoreless innings in relief.

Peoria starter Alex Reyes (3-1) finished his outing after six innings on the mound for the win. Reyes allowed three runs on only two hits while striking out seven and walking four batters. Zach Loraine came on to close the seventh and face three batters in a scoreless inning of work. The Chiefs reliever picked up his third save of the year while securing the 4-3 victory for Peoria.

In game two, Bryan Haar put the Kernels on the board in the bottom of the first inning with a two-run home run to dead-center field, putting Cedar Rapids ahead 2-0. Haar's sixth long-ball of the season took the team-lead in that category. It also scored J.D. Williams, who singled to begin the frame.

Peoria plated five runs in the top of the third inning to take a 5-2 lead. Mason Katz started the rally with a one-out walk. Then, Michael Schulze doubled to deep left, plating Katz to cut the Kernels lead to one. The bases became loaded after a walk and a hit by pitch. Juan Herrera cleared the bases with a three-run triple to right-center, putting Peoria in front 4-2. Herrera then trotted home on a RBI groundout by Ronald Castillo, moving the Chiefs in front by three.

The Kernels scored twice in the fifth inning, cutting the Chiefs lead to 5-4. With two outs, Haar reached with a single. Then, Mitch Garver was hit by a pitch. Bo Altobelli's RBI single into center plated Haar and moved Garver to third base. Garver soon scored when B.K. Santy reached on a throwing error by Chiefs third baseman Michael Schulze.

Josue Montanez (0-2) started for the Kernels and went five innings in the loss. He allowed five runs on four hits while striking out two and walking three.

Peoria increased their lead to 6-4 in the sixth inning. Castillo reached on an error by second baseman Tanner Vavra to begin the inning. After a sacrifice bunt, he scored on a RBI single into right field by Steve Bean.

Jared Wilson made his Kernels debut and went one inning, allowing one unearned run on one hit. He struck out one and walked one. Hudson Boyd added a scoreless inning.

Arturo Reyes started for Peoria and went 4 2/3 innings. He allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits while striking out three and walking three. Chris Perry (2-0) went 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief for the win. Chris Thomas collected the save for the Chiefs. The Kernels host Peoria Wednesday evening in the series-finale with a doubleheader beginning at 5:05 p.m. It's Free Money Wednesday for fans, sponsored by First Federal Credit Union. First Federal Credit Union will give away $500 at the main gates at every Wednesday home game with $100 as the top cash prize.

RHP Kohl Stewart (1-1, 2.35) is scheduled to get the start in game one for the Kernels while Peoria will counter with LHP Jimmy Reed (1-1, 5.34). RHP Felix Jorge (2-3, 8.89) is scheduled to start game two for Cedar Rapids while LHP Chase Brookshire (1-3, 8.57) will open on the mound for the Chiefs. Tickets are available at www.kernels.com.
