Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio-The South Bend Silver Hawks collected 14 hits and hit three solo home runs as they defeated the Dayton Dragons 7-3 on Tuesday night at Fifth Third Field. The loss dropped the Dragons to 22-15 on the season as they fell to second place in the Eastern Division of the Midwest League, one-half game behind first place West Michigan.
South Bend broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth on a pair of solo home runs by George Roberts and Michael Perez. The Silver Hawks also got a solo homer in the fifth from Chuck Taylor.
The early innings of the game featured numerous scoring opportunities on both sides that came up empty. South Bend loaded the bases with no one out in the first before Dayton's Sal Romano got back-to-back strikeouts and a ground out to work out of trouble. The Dragons loaded the bases with no outs in the second, but stranded all three runners after South Bend pitcher Sean Furney struck out the next three in order. The two teams combined for 11 at-bats with men in scoring position over the first two innings without a run.
The Dragons got the scoring started in the third inning when Sebastian Elizalde drilled a solo home run to right-center field with one out to make it 1-0. It was Elizalde's fourth home run of the year. Then in the fourth, Jamodrick McGruder lined a single to center field with two outs and scored from first on Jeff Gelalich's triple to the fence in left-center field to give the Dragons a 2-0 lead. South Bend tied the game with two runs in the fifth before taking the lead for good in the sixth.
Romano worked the first five innings, allowing eight hits and two runs with one walk and four strikeouts. He was not involved in the decision. Dragons reliever Ryan Kemp (0-1) was charged with the loss. He worked two and one-third innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on five hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
The Dragons collected 11 hits but stranded 11 runners including six in scoring position. They struck out a season-high 13 times. Elizalde, Joe Hudson, and Sammy Diaz each had two hits for Dayton.
The Dragons host South Bend at Fifth Third Field again on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in the series finale. Dan Langfield (2-0, 0.00) will start for Dayton against South Bend's Hector Hernandez (0-0, 7.71).
