Luca Caputi 41st Nailer In NHL

January 5, 2010 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release

Pittsburgh, PA - Luca Caputi became the 41st Wheeling Nailers alum to make it to the National Hockey League when he suited up for the Pittsburgh Penguins on January 5th against the Atlanta Thrashers. He is the 429th former ECHL'er all-time to make it.

The Wheeling Nailers are the proud AA affiliate of the defending Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins and extended their ECHL record of most players to graduate on to the NHL.

Caputi had played in 5 games for the Penguins last year scoring one goal but that was BEFORE he played in 3 games for the Nailers. So he did not join the list of former Nailers to make it to the NHL until now when he made it back to Pittsburgh.

Last year Caputi was sent to the Nailers from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and played in three games in early March. He scored two goals and one assist in his stretch in the ECHL before getting called back up to the AHL.

This year with the Baby Pens he was leading the team in goals with 13 and was third in points with 26. He was called up when Chris Kunitz was placed on the I.R.

The 21 year old Caputi from Toronto, Ont. was a 4th round pick of the Penguins in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

Caputi joins Mark Letestu with Pittsburgh and David Laliberte with Philadelphia as former Nailers to make it to the NHL in 2009-2010.

Tickets for the Wheeling Hockey Hall of Fame Dinner on Friday, January 29th and Hall of Fame Game on Saturday, January 30th honoring former Doug Sauter and Nick Bedway are on sale now. Call the Nailers at 304-234-GOAL or log-on at wheelingnailers.com for more information.
