Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - For the second time in as many years, Alaska snapped a double-digit winning streak by Victoria, beating the Salmon Kings 5-3 before 3,327 Monday night at Sullivan Arena.

Alaska (14-17-3 overall) improves to 3-1-1 on its current 10-game homestand heading into a three-game series against struggling Utah, beginning Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. Friday and Saturday night contests also will start at 7:15 p.m. The Aces took two of three from the Grizzlies in late November, and Utah has yet to recover, with only one win in its last 11 games. All three games will will be broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM, with the Peanut Farm Pre-Game Show beginning at 7:00 p.m. each night.

Victoria (18-14-3) had seen its 15-game winning streak come to an end last January 14 at the hands of Alaska, and entering Monday, the Salmon Kings had strung together 12 straight wins, six of which came by a single goal, including Sunday's 3-2 shootout decision over the Aces. But Alaska started fast Monday, taking its first lead of the three-game series (Victoria also won 6-2 Saturday) when Evan Kotsopoulos scored his first goal in seven games with the Aces at 2:43 of the opening frame.

With 3:49 remaining in the period, Nick Mazzolini won a draw directly to fellow ECHL All-Star John Lammers, who proceeded to rifle his 18th goal (tied for third in the league) in 22 ECHL games this season past Victoria starter Glenn Fisher. A power play goal by Eric Boguniecki (pictured, photo courtesy Greg Martin) with 1.6 seconds left in the frame gave Alaska a 3-0 lead and ended Fisher's night after 20 minutes and only six saves.

David Shantz, who had won his last nine starts, came on to relieve Fisher in the second period and the visitors rallied late in the frame. Chad Painchaud set up Jimmy Sharrow for a virtual tap-in at 14:01 and assisted on Wes Goldie's 20th goal of the year in the final half-minute of the period to draw the Salmon Kings within 3-2.

Having blown a 4-0 lead in Victoria last Monday night, Alaska came out aggressively in the third period, with Jason Ryznar (who now has points in five straight games) pouncing on a Justin Johnson rebound in the slot and launching a drive that went top shelf on Shantz just 2:48 into the period. A tip-in by Olivier Latendresse cut the gap to 4-3 with 6:55 still remaining, but an empty-netter by Colin Hemingway secured the victory for the Aces with 1:11 to play. Frank Doyle, acquired by Alaska on New Year's Day, claimed his first victory in five career starts at Sullivan Arena (having played for Idaho in 2005) with 29 saves.
