Albany Devils News Release
Rewind:
Wednesday, Phantoms 4 vs. DEVILS 2
Joe Rooney's goal at 6:41 of the first period allowed the Devils to draw first blood, but the Phantoms went on to score the next four to skate away with a 4-2 win. Barry Tallackson recorded a two-point night (1g, 1a), including the power play goal that pulled Lowell back within two at 2:56 of the third period. Despite a 2-for-6 effort on their power play, the Devils could not stave off the Phantoms offense led by Darroll Powe's three-point game (1g, 2a).
Friday, Falcons 3 vs. DEVILS 2 (SO)
The Devils saw a potential victory elude them as the Falcons came from behind to pull out a 3-2 shootout win. Olli Malmivaara put Lowell in a prime position when his power play goal lifted the team to a 2-1 lead with 3:43 remaining. That lasted only 45 seconds as Jean-Francois Jacques tied the score and sent the contest into the shootout. There, it was Jeff Deslauriers stoning the first three Lowell shooters, while Springfield went 3-for-3 to clinch the win.
Sunday, Pirates 5 vs. DEVILS 1
The Pirates scored early and often to coast to a 5-1 win over the Devils. Portland held Lowell to just one power play goal in eight chances, while going 2-of-3 on the man-advantage. Nicklas Bergfors was the lone goal scorer for the Devils as he picked up a power play goal at 17:25 of the second period that made the score 3-1. The Pirates scored goals in under two minutes from the start of all three periods.
In the standings
The Lowell Devils lost some ground this past week as they sit six points behind the sixth-place Worcester Sharks. The Manchester Monarchs have hopped over the Sharks into fifth place and own a three-point edge. Meanwhile, only two points separate the Monarchs and the Springfield Falcons above them. The Hartford Wolf Pack have a comfortable eight-point cushion for third place and are only two back of the Portland Pirates. The Pirates look to chip away on the nine points between them and the first-place Providence Bruins.
Coming Up
Now officially past the midway point of the season, the Lowell Devils take to the road for two games this week. Their first opponent will be the Providence Bruins on Friday, January 18 for the seventh match of the season between the two teams. Last time out, the Devils gathered their first win of the year against the Bruins, 3-1, at Tsongas Arena. Still the owners of the best record in the AHL (30-7-2-1), Providence has recently hit the skids slightly. After winning 15-of-18, they have gone 1-2-0-1 in their last four games.
The Devils then head to Philadelphia for a Sunday matinee against the Phantoms on January 20. This will be Lowell's last chance to get a win in the four-game season series against the top team in the East Division. Philadelphia is the only team in the league that is ranked in the top ten on the power play (4th, 19.8%), penalty kill (6th, 85.6%), goals for (8th, 3.13) and goals against (2nd, 2.35). The Phantoms have lost two of their last three games.
