January 15, 2008 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Iowa Chops News Release
Tuesday night Scott Clemmensen made his first start in Des Moines in nearly a decade. This time he did it as a visitor, the former Des Moines Bucs and Capital player returned to Iowa as a member of the visiting Toronto Marlies and stopped 21 of 22 shots as they defeated the Stars 2-1, handing the Stars their second straight loss. The Stars will look to rebound Friday night as they host the Rockford Ice Hogs.
The Stars had three powerplay chances in the first period, including a 2-man advantage for 55 seconds but were unable to convert on any of their chances, despite outshooting the Marlies 10 to 7 in the period. The Stars best chance to score in the period came during their 2-man advantage when twice a player in front of the net had a clear shot following a centering feed, but BJ Crombeen and Konstantin Pushkarev both pushed their shots wide, leaving the score at 0-0 after one period.
Eleven minutes into the second period the Marlies would strike first. Derrick Walser scored his 11th goal of the season, unassisted to give Toronto a 1-0 lead. Walser stole the puck in the corner, danced in front of the net and then clanked one off of the right side joist and in. Then with under two minutes to play Jeremy Williams scored for the Marlies. William's fifth goal of the season was assisted by Bates Battaglia and Kris Newsbury and gave Toronto a 2-0 lead heading into the second break.
The Stars converted on their fourth powerplay chance of the night to finally break onto the scoring sheet. Defenceman, Nolan Baumgartner, scored eight minutes into the third period on assists from Vojtech Polak and Marty Sertich. The Stars though, failed to capitalize on a pair of late powerplay oppurtunities in the third period. The Stars saw the first of two penalties as a result of a game misconduct penalty dealt to Colin Murphy, who punched Stars forward Richard Clune in the jaw after a whistle. The Stars continued to fire shots at the Marlies' keeper Clemmensen but were unable to get anymore past the Des Moines native.
The Stars play 4 more home games before they head back out on the road. They will play Friday and Saturday night against the Rockford Ice Hogs. A special 5:05 game against Rochester is scheduled for Monday, then the Stars finish off their longest homestand of the season against Peoria next Friday night.
