BELOIT, WI - The Great Lakes Loons turned a triple play in the bottom of the first but couldn't overcome a four errors and dropped a 5-1 decision to Beloit Monday. The game was played in front of 2,740 fans, many of them school kids attending Pohlman Field on field trips.

Beloit led 2-0 in the top of the first with the bases loaded and no outs against Loons' starter Kyle Smit. Beloit's Dominic de la Osa hit a low line drive that Loons first baseman Tony Delmonico caught shoe-top high. Delmonico stepped on first base for the play's second out. Meanwhile Evan Bigley thought the ball bounced and took off for the plate. Delmonico threw to the plate and catcher Matt Wallach fired to third baseman Parker Dalton to complete the triple play. It was the first triple play turned in team history.

But the Loons' defense let them down later in the game. The team was charged with four errors, leading to three unearned runs for Beloit.

The Loons' only run came on a seventh-inning solo home run by Kyle Russell. His blast snapped a streak of 11 consecutive batters retired by Snappers starter Brad Tippett (2-0). Russell now leads the Midwest League with five homers and 22 RBIs.

Tippett picked up the win. Smit (0-2) in his second start of the year was charged with the loss.

The Loons (13-11) begin a 10-day, 11-game homestand Tuesday night with the first of three games against Quad Cities. Game time is 7:05pm. It's a Dollar Family Feast Night, with $1 prices in the concession stands on hot dogs, ice cream sandwiches and 12 oz. sodas. Right-hander Justin Miller (2-1, 4.37 ERA) will start for the Loons against righty Gary Daley (2-0, 6.75).
