Chiefs Win Finale at Cedar Rapids 3-2 Monday Night Burke's double in ninth gives Chiefs first win of series
Cedar Rapids, IA - The Peoria Chiefs scored in the top of the ninth and defeated the Cedar Rapids Kernels 4-3 Monday night in the finale of a three-game series. The win moves the Chiefs to 12-11 on the season and ends a three game slide.
The Kernels picked up an unearned run in the bottom of the first against Chiefs starter Chris Archer. Tyson Auer drew a four pitch lead-off walk and moved to second on a groundout by Alexi Amarista. Newcomer Roberto Lopez hit a comebacker to Archer and the Chiefs hurler had Auer frozen between second and third. But his throw to third sailed down the left-field line and Auer came around to score.
Josh Vitters appeared to tie the game in the top of the second with a home run down the left field line, but home plate umpire Greg Stanzak called it foul drawing the ire of Chiefs Manager Marty Pevey. Vitters eventually struck out and the Chiefs went in order.
That call had repercussions in the top of the fourth. Vitters hit the first pitch off his left foot for a foul ball, but Stanzak called him out when catcher Beau Brooks picked up the ball and tagged Vitters. An argument ensued between Vitters, Pevey and Stanzak that resulted in an immediate ejection of Vitters. Stanzak then conferred with base umpire Adam Schwarz who ruled the ball foul. Pevey was then ejected by Stanzak after another confrontation. Michael Brenly pinch-hit for Vitters and bounced out to short. On the next pitch the Chiefs tied the game as Nelson Perez hit his seventh homer of the season, a solo shot to straight away centerfield. Ryan Flaherty followed with a two-out walk and stole second. Luis Flores walked and Josh Harrison put Peoria on top 2-1 with a single to left.
The Chiefs added to their lead in the fifth against Correa. Rebel Ridling doubled to center and after two outs Perez drew a walk. Junior Lake's grounder was booted by Adam Younger at third base and Ridling came around to score for a 3-1 Chiefs lead.
Cedar Rapids rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth against reliever Josh Whitlock. Amarista led off with a single, stole second with one out and advanced to third on a two-out wild pitch. Brooks tied the game with a line-drive homer to right, his first of the season.
Peoria bounced right back in the ninth inning with a two-out rally against Kernels reliever Francis Cabrera. Following a pair of groundouts Ridling reached on a single to left. Kyler Burke doubled over the head of Auer in center and Ridling scored without a throw for a 4-3 Chiefs lead. Brenly reached on an infield single but Perez flew out to end the inning.
Archer went just two innings, his shortest outing of the season, allowing one unearned run on one hit and two walks. Cabreraallowed just three hits and a walk while striking out three in four shutout innings of work. Whitlock (1-1) allowed two runs on three hits while striking out three in his two innings of work. Kevin Kreier retired the Kernels in order in the ninth for his second save of the season.
Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Kyler Burke (LF) - Burke put the Chiefs on top in the ninth inning with a double to center field. The double scored Rebel Ridling from first with two outs and put the Cheifs up 4-3. Burke and Ridling now share the team and MWL lead with 10 doubles. Burke finished the game 2-for-4 with one RBI.
