West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

BURLINGTON, IA- Gustavo Nunez's daring dash to the plate on ball four produced the go-ahead run for the West Michigan Whitecaps in Monday night's 3-1 win over the Burlington Bees in ten innings. The ‘Caps win the series, 2-1, and continue their streak of winning every series they've played in this year.

The Whitecaps got the scoring started in the top of the second when Ben Guez drew a one-out walk. With two outs, Chao-Ting Tang singled to right center to score Guez for a 1-0 lead.

Burlington put together a major threat in the sixth. Eric Hosmer singled with one out, and David Wood coaxed a walk with two outs. Then Bees' DH Salvador Perez, who was 2-2 already, hit a line drive to left that faded toward the corner. Left fielder Billy Nowlin raced across and made an outstanding backhand catch to end the inning and the Bees' scoring chance.

As the game moved to the eighth, Burlington scratched a run together with Salvador Perez's third hit of the night, an RBI single, that brought home pinch-runner Wilson Tucker to tie the game at 1-1.

For the second straight game the ‘Caps played extra baseball. West Michigan edged in front in the top of the tenth as Gustavo Nunez walked with one out, stole second and went to third on a bad throw. That set up the surprise sprint of Nunez to the plate as ball four rolled away from Bees' catcher Jose Bonilla, and the ‘Caps led 2-1. Left fielder Billy Nowlin would add an insurance run with an RBI single to plate Ronnie Bourquin and make the score, 3-1.

West Michigan received a fine starting pitching performance from Brandon Hamilton. The right hander went 6 innings, giving up 5 hits, no runs, 2 walks, and 2 strikeouts. Whitecaps reliever Eric Crichton records the win. Bees' pitcher Barry Bowder takes the loss.

‘Caps' third baseman Bryan Pounds was the only hitter with multiple hits (2).

The Whitecaps will now come home for a 6 game home stand. They will entertain the Beloit Snappers for 3 games, and then welcome in the Clinton Lumberkings for three. RH Brayan Villareal is set to start on Tuesday night in the opener against the Snappers. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:35 EST.
