Loons Close First Half with Road Victory at Lake County

EASTLAKE, Ohio - The Great Lakes Loons (27-43) finished the first half of the 2013 season with a 6-2 road win over the Lake County Captains (23-44) on Sunday afternoon at Classic Park. Each of the Loons nine starters picked up at least one hit as the Loons picked up a win to split their four-game series with Lake County. Great Lakes closed the first half by winning nine of their final 12 games.

Two-time Major League All-Star closer, Chris Perez, started the game for the Captains on a rehab assignment for the Cleveland Indians. The owner of back-to-back 30-save seasons pitched one inning in his first professional start. Loons leadoff hitter Robbie Garvey, who was 2-for-5, and two-hitter Leo Rodriguez each singled to right field, but were each gunned down by catcher Eric Haase trying to steal second base.

The Captains scored their only two runs of the ballgame in the home half of the first inning on a two-run Haase home run to left field.

Great Lakes cleanup hitter Aaron Miller scored the Loons first run of the ballgame, coming home on a Kevin Taylor groundout in the top of the second.

Julio Urias made his fifth career professional start and pitched three innings, giving up two runs on four hits. Urias struck out four and walked three.

Midwest League All-Star Tyler Ogle, hitting in the three-hole, hit a solo home run in the fourth to tie the game at 2-2.

Owen Jones and Scott Griggs (1-4) each threw two scoreless innings in relief. Jones did not give up a hit, while Griggs stuck out three and picked up the win for the Loons.

The Loons won the game in the road half of the seventh, scoring four runs to take a 6-2 lead. Five-hitter Joe Winker, who was 4-for-4 in the game with two extra-base hits, started the scoring with a solo home run to right field with one out. Eight-hitter James Baldwin hit a two-run triple to right field, scoring Taylor and Jose Capellan. Baldwin scored the last run of the frame, coming home on a Malcolm Holland groundout.

Ryan Merritt (3-7) was originally slated to make the start for Lake Country before Perez was assigned to a rehab start. Merritt threw six inning of relief, giving up six runs, all earned, on nine hits to pick up the loss. Merritt stuck out four and walked two.

Craig Stem finished the game for the Great Lakes, throwing a scoreless inning in both the eighth and ninth innings.

Lake County two-hitter Erik Gonzalez and cleanup hitter Joseph Sever each had multi-hit game for the Captains.

The All-Star break begins on Monday and the Midwest League All-Star Game is Tuesday from Fifth-Third Field in Dayton, Ohio. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. and can be heard on ESPN 100.9-FM. Tyler Ogle is the lone representative for the Loons. The club's two other All-Star selections, Jharel Cotton and Carlos Frias, have both been promoted since being selected to the Eastern Division All-Star team.

The Loons begin the second-half of their season on Thursday, as they open a three-game series against the West Michigan Whitecaps at Dow Diamond. Game time is 7:05 p.m. It is a $1 Family Feast Night at Dow Diamond. For just a dollar each, fans can purchase hot dogs, 16 oz. Coca-Cola products and ice creams sandwiches.
