South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
Taking advantage of a Silver Hawks error in the third inning, the Dayton Dragons took an early 1-0 lead and never looked back enroute to a 2-0 victory. Dayton starter Ismael Guillon (3-6) limited the Hawks to only two hits over six innings of work, while striking out seven. The loss marks the end of the first half of the Midwest League season for the Eastern Division Champion Silver Hawks.
JR Bradley (2-4) got the late nod to start for the Hawks. Daniel Watts was scratched, as he is expected to start for the East in Tuesday's Midwest League All Star Game. Bradley was able to keep the Dragons at bay until the third. Right fielder Daniel Pigott led off with a single to center. Second baseman Sammy Diaz laid down a bunt that turned into an infield single as it rolled between Bradley and third baseman Brandon Drury, allowing him to reach first. The Dragons then executed the double steal with Pigott and Diaz stealing third and second respectively. With two outs, designated hitter Joe Terry hit what looked to be the third out, but Carter Bell encountered issues cleaning fielding the ball, allowing Terry to safely reach first and Pigott to cross the plate, giving the Dragons a 1-0 lead on the unearned run.
The South Bend Silver Hawks, Class-A affiliate of the National League West leading Arizona Diamondbacks, started a rally of their own in the bottom of the third. Bell led off the frame with a walk. Left fielder Mike Lang followed with a single to left. With two outs, center fielder Breland Almadova singled to shallow left. Manager Mark Haley had the windmill in motion sending Bell homeward. However, before Bell could cross the plate the throw from left beat him to end the Hawks scoring threat.
The platoon of Silver Hawk pitching shut down the Dragons until they managed to tack on another run in the eighth. Hawks reliever Chris Capper, entered in the fifth and pitched three hitless innings, including striking out two. In the eighth, Thomas Brendel issued a walk to Terry that proved costly as he later came around to score. Centerfield Junior Arias advanced Terry to second on his single to center. Then, after moving up to third on a 5-3 ground out by third baseman Tanner Rahier, Terry headed home on shortstop Zach Vincej's single to right, giving the Dragons a 2-0 lead.
Despite having two outs in the bottom of the ninth, the Hawks threatened a comeback. Catcher Roidany Aguila singled to left and quickly moved up to second on a passed ball. Bell drew a walk to bring the winning run to the plate. With 4,055 Silver Hawks fans on their feet, Dayton closer Sean Lucas (S, 10) was able to get left fielder Mike Lang to ground out to short to end the rally and the game.
The Midwest Leauge All-Star Game will be played Tuesday, June 18, at 7:00 pm, at Fifth Third Field in Dayton, Ohio, home of the Dayton Dragons. Six members of the Silver Hawks have been selected to the Eastern Division Team: 3rd baseman Brandon Drury, outfielder Alex Glenn, and pitchers Jesse Darrah, RJ Hively, Brandon Sinnery, and Daniel Watts.
After the All-Star Break, the Hawks will start the second half on Thursday, June 20, in Fort Wayne, at 7:05 pm. The Silver Hawks return to Coveleski Regional Stadium on June 26, when they will host the Bowling Green Hot Rods on a Kids Eat Free Wednesday. Gates open at 6:00pm and the first pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
