Burlington Bees News Release
Chance Ross singled home Wade Hinkle in the eighth to give the Burlington Bees a 2-1 victory and a split of a doubleheader on Saturday night at Modern Woodmen Park.
It was a long night in Davenport, Iowa, as the Bees (26-38) and River Bandits (37-31) played 17 innings to get through both games of a doubleheader.
In game one, the Bees fell 6-5 in nine innings, losing on a walk-off single by Carlos Correa that scored Teoscar Hernandez. Hernandez was running on the pitch and scored all the way from first base on a single hit to left-center field off of Austin Adams (0-1).
The Bees had a 5-0 lead after two innings, scoring three in the first on a RBI single by Andrew Ray, a RBI groundout from Pedro Toribio and a passed ball that scored Ray. Two more runs scored in the second on a throwing error by Correa that brought home Soto and a RBI triple from Wade Hinkle that scored Kyle Johnson.
Quad Cities did not let up, getting a solo home run in the third from Hernandez to put a run on the board. In the sixth, Brandon Love loaded the bases on a double and two walks and left with no outs. Jairo Diaz entered and after striking out Austin Elkins, he surrendered a grand slam to Brian Blasik to tie the game.
Mitchell Lambson (4-3) pitched a scoreless top of the ninth to earn the victory in the first game.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Tyler DeLoach was a star in his Midwest League debut. The southpaw hurled six innings of one-run ball, allowing a lone run to score in the third on a double by Brett Phillips and a single by Ruben Sosa.
Lance McCullers was just as solid for Quad Cities, surrendering one run in his five innings. The one run scored when Kyle Johnson tripled home Sandy Martinez.
Robbie Powell (2-0) came on in the seventh with Carlos Correa at third and struck out Blasik to send the game into extra innings.
In the eighth, Wade Hinkle led off the inning with a single off of John Neely (1-4) and went to second on a groundout by Michael Bolaski. Chance Ross was then hit by a pitch, but the umpires ruled that Ross was swinging, so he was sent back to home plate. The next pitch he saw, he smacked into centerfield for a single to score Hinkle.
Powell fired a perfect eighth to earn his second win of the season.
The Bees have now taken two of three games from the River Bandits, and the two will face off for the final time in the first half on Sunday night at 5:00 p.m. Bees' ace Ryan Crowley will take on Mike Hauschild.
