Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - Taylor Guerrieri pitched five scoreless innings to lead the Bowling Green Hot Rods (38-30) to a series win over the Lansing Lugnuts (32-37) with a 8-0 victory on Sunday afternoon at Cooley Law School Stadium.
The loss ends the Lugnuts' first half of the season with a 32-37 record, good for fifth place in the Midwest League's Eastern Division.
Guerrieri (Win, 5-2) gave up just four hits over his five frames on the mound, stifling the Lugnuts hitters all afternoon. Guerrieri struck out seven hitters, his second highest total of the season, and he issued just a single walk.
Nick Sawyer, Jose Molina and Marcus Jensen pitched four scoreless innings in relief of Guerrieri to seal the shutout victory.
Offensively for Bowling Green, the bottom third of the batting order - Joey Rickard, Patrick Leonard and Brandon Martin - supplied most of the offense.
Rickard finished 3-for-3 at the plate with a walk, missing just a triple to complete the cycle. He scored the Hot Rods' first run in the second inning off an RBI double by Martin, and he hit a solo home run in the sixth as well.
Martin finished 3-for-4, scoring the Hot Rods' second run in the fifth inning following a sacrifice fly, and Leonard's two-run home run in the eighth inning added to the Hot Rods' scoring.
Lansing starter Alonzo Gonzalez (Loss, 2-6) gave up three runs in five innings of work on seven total hits. Gonzalez struck out five Bowling Green hitters while issuing one walk. Lansing used four relievers in the outing and the staff struck out a combined 13 batters.
In the loss, Kevin Patterson smashed a double in the fourth inning and Kellen Sweeney reached in two of three at-bats with a single and a walk.
Following a three-day break for the Midwest League All-Star Break, the Lugnuts will start the second half of the season on Thursday, June 20th, taking on the Hot Rods in a three-game series in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
