Loons Can't Hold Lead in 6-5 Loss
August 15, 2008 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Great Lakes Loons News Release
The Loons got ahead early but couldn't hold a three-run lead as the Loons fell 6-5 to the Dayton Dragons in front of 5,222 fans at Dow Diamond on Friday night. Starter Josh Lindblom lost another chance to pick up his first professional victory. The Dragons scored five unanswered runs to end the ballgame.
The Loons scored the first two runs of the ballgame when Brandon Taylor ripped a two-run single to give the Loons an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. After a Dayton run in the second, the Loons tacked on two more runs in a bottom of the inning highlighted by Parker Dalton's RBI double to make it 4-1.
Mike McKennon began the Dragons' comeback in the fifth when he blasted a two-run homer to right field, his seventh home run of the season to bring Dayton within a run at 4-3.
In the seventh, Jake Kahaulelio ripped a bases-loaded, two-run single off of reliever Miguel Sanfler to give Dayton a 5-4 lead. They got themselves an insurance run on a bases-loaded walk of Keltavious Jones from Bobby Blevins to make it a 6-4 lead.
The Loons put together a huge threat in the ninth, loading the bases with nobody out. Andrew Lambo brought home a run on a RBI groundout to make it 6-5. Then Dragons reliever Aguido Gonzalez struck out Eduardo Perez and Jaime Ortiz on an 11 pitch at-bat to end the ballgame.
Mace Thurman picked up the win for Dayton to improve to 1-0 after throwing three innings of scoreless baseball for the Dragons. Gonzalez picked up the save in relief, his fourth of the season. Bob Zimmermann got the loss for the Loons after two of his inherited runners scored when Sanfler was on the mound to fall to 0-3 on the year.
Devin Mesoraco led the way offensively for Dayton going 4-for-5 while Erik Kanaby notched three hits for the Loons in the loss.
The Loons will travel to Dayton to take on the Dragons in a four-game series Saturday night from Fifth Third Field. You can catch all the action live from Dayton on the radio flagship home for Great Lakes Loons Baseball, ESPN 100.9-FM.
