
Kernels lose battle with Kane County, 8-7

August 14, 2008 - The Cedar Rapids Kernels fell for the second night in a row in a tough battle with the Kane County Cougars by the score of 8-7 on Thursday night at Philip B. Elfstrom Stadium in Geneva, IL. The Kernels took an early 2-0 lead, only to see it slip away in the sixth inning as the Cougars scored six runs on a grand slam by Greg Dowling and a two run HR by Petey Paramore.
The Kernels rallied with four in the eighth and one more in the ninth to take a 7-6 lead into the bottom of the ninth. But Kane County scored two runs with two outs in the ninth for an 8-7 win. Kernels starter Trevor Reckling allowed five hits, walked one and struck out three over five scoreless innings in a no-decision effort and Ysmael Carmona (1-4) took the loss, giving up two runs on three hits over 1.2 innings.
Clay Fuller and Gabe Jacobo each had two RBI as Fuller was 1-4 with a double and Jacobo was 1-3. Andrew Romine was 2-5 with an RBI and stole his 54th base of the season and Julio Perez was 2-5 with a double and RBI as the Kernels had 12 hits.
Kane County starter Jamie Richmond allowed six runs (five earned) on 10 hits, walked one and struck out five over 7.1 innings in a no-decision effort. Reliever Chad Kerfoot (6-1) allowed an unearned run on two hits and struck out four over the final 1.2 innings for the win.
