Long Island Nets Defeat Canton in Martin Luther King Jr. Day Matinee Game

LONG ISLAND - The Long Island Nets (9-16), the NBA G League affiliate of the Brooklyn Nets, defeated the Canton Charge (16-10) 121-113 today at NYCB LIVE, home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

Long Island center Jonathan Kasibabu led the way for the Nets, finishing the game with a career-high 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field, 2-of-2 shooting from 3-point range and 3-of-4 shooting from the charity stripe to go with 12 rebounds in 34 minutes of action, recording his second double-double of the season. Long Island guard Devin Cannady also had a strong game, finishing with a team-high 24 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field, 6-of-11 shooting from 3-point range and 2-of-2 shooting from the free throw line while adding five rebounds and four assists in 36 minutes of play.

Canton guard Sheldon Mac had a strong performance for the Charge, finishing with a game-high 31 points on 9-of-18 shooting from the field, 3-of-7 shooting from the 3-point line and 5-of-5 shooting from the charity stripe in 35 minutes off the bench. Canton guard Malik Newman also had a strong showing, finishing with 21 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field and 4-of-8 shooting from 3-point range to go with six assists in 33 minutes of play.

Both teams came out the gate trading blows to start the game, with Long Island managing to take a 19-13 lead half way through the opening quarter. Canton, however, would respond over the remainder of the first, taking a 31-24 lead into the second.

Long Island opened the second quarter with a 7-0 run, evening the score at 31-31. The Nets would go on to outscore the Charge 32-25 in the second, as the two teams closed out the half tied up at 56-56.

The two teams played neck and neck throughout the third quarter, with neither side able to take a lead more than six points. Long Island would manage to pull ahead by two points before the end of the quarter, taking a narrow 88-86 lead into the fourth.

The tight play carried over into the fourth quarter, with both teams battling for a win. An 8-0 run by the Nets gave Long Island a 114-107 lead with 2:16 remaining that proved to be the difference, as Long Island closed out the Charge by the final score 121-113.

The Nets play their next game against the South Bay Lakers on Wednesday, Jan. 22, at 7 p.m. ET at NYCB LIVE, while the Charge will return home to face the Lakeland Magic next on Wednesday, Jan. 22, at 7 p.m. ET.
