Texas Legends News Release
FRISCO, TX - The Texas Legends (14-13) dropped a heartbreaker to the Salt Lake City Stars (18-7) 111-112 in the MLK Day game.
Trevon Bluiett started the back-and-forth with an early three for the Stars. After nine lead changes, Texas took over with 34 seconds and used a last second fadeaway from Dakota Mathias to end the first up 29-26. Back-to-back threes from Brandon Fields put the Legends up 13 at the five-minute mark of the second, but the Stars took control from there. Holding Texas to two points for the remainder of the half, the visitors erased the gap and went into the break with a three-point edge.
Jarrell Brantley and Justin Wright-Foreman exploded for a combined 28-point performance in the third to help Salt Lake City double the Legends' score and take their largest lead of the night at the buzzer. Facing a 21-point deficit in the fourth, Texas came out firing. Fueled by a rowdy crowd, the Legends knocked down 63% and found themselves within one with 21 seconds on the clock. Using a missed opportunity from the home team, the Stars hit 3-of-4 free throws to go back up by four, but Brandon Fields answered with an outside jumper to save the home team's hopes. The free throw line encouraged the hope as Bluiett made only one-of-two and the game stayed at two points, but it was the free throw line that ended it as Texas missed on 2-of-3 final second opportunities to give Salt Lake City the victory.
Dakota Mathias had a game-high 25 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 steals. Aric Holman came off the bench for 14 points, a team-high 8 rebounds, and 4 assists. Yudai Baba and Brandon Fields added 13 points and 3 rebounds each. Antonius Cleveland finished with 12 points, 3 rebounds, and Jahmal McMurray rounded out the double-digit scoring with 10 points off the bench.
Justin Wright-Foreman led the Stars with 25 points and 5 rebounds. Jarrell Brantley added 24 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 blocks, while Trevon Bluiett finished with 23 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists. Nigel Williams-Goss tallied 15 points, 5 assists, and Kyle Collinsworth grabbed the game's only double-double with 11 points, 12 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals.
The Legends head to Oklahoma City next to take on the Blue this Thursday at 7pm before returning home Sunday to host the College Park Skyhawks at 3pm. For tickets or broadcast information call 214-469-0822 or visit www.TexLegends.com.
