LANSING, Mich. - Cancer survivors and their families will join the Lansing Lugnuts to call on Congress to boost the nation's investment in lifesaving cancer research on Sunday, June 21 at the Cooley Law School Stadium.

The event is one of dozens nationwide in which minor league baseball teams are teaming up with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) and Fans for a Cure as part of the One Degree Campaign to save more lives from cancer.

"Everyone has a connection to cancer. We're all just One Degree away from a family member or friend who has fought the disease, and many of us have battled it ourselves," said Lansing Lugnuts pitching coach Jeff Ware. "We are asking people to share their One Degree with Congress and call on lawmakers to make federal funding for cancer research a national priority."

Federal funding for medical research has declined more than 24 percent in inflation-adjusted dollars since 2003, forcing cancer centers to halt promising clinical trials and drying up the grant pool relied upon by researchers. One Degree brings the voices of millions of people affected by cancer to lawmakers with the message that Congress must boost the federal investment in cancer research.
