
Captains Late Rally Comes up Short

Lake County Captains News Release
(Midland, MI) -For the second straight night, the Lake County Captains fell behind early and rallied to tie the score. But for the second straight night it wasn't enough. The Captains would strand the go ahead run on base in back to back innings before the Great Lakes Loons would score in the eighth inning for a 4-3 win.
With two outs in the bottom of the first inning, Justin Chigbogu homered to centerfield off Captains starter Thomas Pannone to put the Loons up 1-0.
The Loons would add two more in the bottom of the fourth inning. Julian Leon started the inning by reaching on a hit by pitch. With two outs and Leon still at first, Cristian Gomez tripled to drive in Leon. Gomez would then score on an RBI single from Kelvin Ramos for a 3-0 Loons lead.
The Captains would battle back in the top of the fifth. With one out Francisco Mejia walked. Steven Patterson would follow with a double. The double was the Captains first hit of the game. With runners at second and third, Yonathan Mendoza singled to score Mejia. Patterson was thrown out at the plate trying to score as well to end the inning with the Captains trailing 3-1.
The game would get tied in the top of the sixth inning. Greg Allen doubled to start the inning. Taylor Murphy would then bounce into a fielder's choice but would reach second when the Loons tried to get Allen at third but a throwing error would allow both runner to reach safely. Claudio Bautista would then promptly double into the leftfield corner to score both Allen and Murphy to tie the game at 3.
With the game tied at 3 entering the top of the eighth inning, Bautista tripled to start the inning. However, the Captains were unable to get him home as the next three would go in order.
The Loons would score the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Chigbogu walked to start the inning. Alex Santana would follow with a double. Chigbogu was thrown out trying to go to third. Leon would follow with a base hit to score Santana with the winning run.
Thomas Pannone started and went 5.0 innings. He allowed 3 runs, all earned, on 6 hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out 8. Jordan Carter would then go 2.0 innings in relief. He allowed 2 hits and did not walk a batter or record a strike out. Nick Pasquale (1-1) took the loss in 1.0 inning of relief. He allowed 1 run, earned, on 2 hits. He walked 1 and did not strike out a batter.
The Captains will look to avoid the three game sweep on Thursday night. Justus Sheffield (5-1) will make his final start before the All Star game. First pitch is at 7:05PM and can be heard on 1330AM WINT.
