Lightning Strikes for Truelson in Condors 3-2 Win Over Thunder

December 10, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Bakersfield Condors News Release

BAKERSFIELD, Calif., - Kevin Truelson's game- tying goal with 1:26 left in regulation game sent the game to a shootout, where Ryan Munce stopped all four Stockton attempts to give the Condors a 3-2 shootout victory over the Stockton Thunder in front of 5,877 fans at the Rabobank Arena.

Amidst a penalty-filled first period, the Condors initiated scoring on a four-on-three power play. Kevin St. Jacques won the faceoff to the left side of Stockton netminder Jake Moreland and drew it back to Scott Basiuk. The Condors defenseman set up Sean Venedam at the top of the slot, who wound up and fired a slap shot through Moreland's five-hole, giving Bakersfield a 1-0 lead with 13:09 left in the first period.

Despite finding themselves down on the penalty kill for much of the second period, the Condors defensive corps tightened up, allowing the Thunder only five shots on net in the frame. The scoreless period featured several highlight-reel saves by both Ryan Munce and Moreland.

Stockton would convert an expired five-on-three turned power play early in the third period, as Steve Slonina sent a hard wrister through the legs of Munce to tie the game at 1-1 just 2:25 into the third.

Nathan Martz would put the Thunder up late on a wrister from the dots in the circles off of cross-slot passes from Steve Slonina and Marie Zeidens late in the period, temporarily silencing the 5,877 in attendance ad giving Stockton a late 2-1 advantage.

Bakersfield was given a late power play on a hooking penalty on Tony Johnson and took the chance to pull Ryan Munce for the six-on-four advantage. The Condors would earn a penalty shot on a scrum in the crease, bu Kevin St. Jacques' shot sailed over the net. At the conclusion of the power play, head coach Marty Raymond would pull Munce once more, just as Scott Basiuk identified a passing lane to Kevin Truelson. Truelson buried the equalizer on a one-timer past Moreland to knot the game at 2- 2 with 1:26 remaining in regulation.

Neither team capitalized on man-advantages in the extra five minutes as both goaltenders prepared for the shootout. The Condors would set the pace early, with two of their first three shooters, Alexandre Bolduc and Sean Venedam, converting. As has become a trend in the shootout, Ryan Munce stopped all four attempts he faced, including the final shooter, Likit Andersson, as the Condors picked up the 3-2 shootout victory.

Munce earned the win, stopping 27 of 29 Stockton shots, and improved to 6-0-3 on the season. Jake Moreland was credited with the loss despite a solid 46-save evening on 48 Condor attempts.

Other notes: Eight of the Condors' nine home games have gone to overtime. Bakersfield is 2- 2 in games decided in the overtime period and 4-2 in shootouts. Ryan Munce now leads the ECHL with four shootout victories. Basiuk's two assists were his first points since November 17th versus San Diego. Basiuk recorded his team-leading fourth multiple point game of the season.

The Condors hit the road for a three game trip to the southwest next weekend. Bakersfield opens three-in-a-row with a 7:11p.m. meeting with the Phoenix Roadrunners on Friday night at the America West Arena, then head to San Diego the following evening to take on the Gulls Saturday night. Following that game, the Condors return to Phoenix for a Sunday afternoon affair with the Roadrunners.
