Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC - With Goaltender Rob McVicar recalled to the Vancouver Canucks this afternoon, David Currie started in net for the Victoria Salmon Kings. Despite giving up a goal in the first minute of the game, Currie and the Salmon Kings beat the Idaho Steelheads, 5-1.

Steelheads Forward Greg Hornby scored his second of the season just 21 seconds into the first period, but the Salmon Kings came right back on the Steelheads tying the game just four minutes later.

Forward Jade Galbraith controlled the puck well behind the net before stepping out in front of Goaltender Matt Yeats. Yeats made the first save, but left the rebound on the stick of Galbraith, who beat the goalie on his second chance.

At 6:06, Forward Adam Taylor scored his seventh goal of the season when he picked up a Steelhead turnover at the Idaho blue line. Taylor backed the Steelheads defense in on Yeats before ripping a shot and beating the goalie glove side to give the Salmon Kings a 2-1 lead, at the first intermission.

Victoria opened the scoring in the second period when Mike Wirll scored his sixth goal of the season on the powerplay at 6:35. Wirll took Steve Lingren's wide point shot off the end boards, and beat the sprawling Yeats, who had no chance on the play.

The Salmon Kings extended their lead to 4-1 when Forward Mike Josephson finally recorded his first of the season, while causing a ruckus in front of the Steelheads goaltender. Adam Huxley earned his first point with Victoria, when he passed it to Defenseman Pat Sutton who ripped the shot off Josephson and past Yeats, at 16:53.

Victoria played a calculated road game through 40 minutes and continued through the final period. Forward KC Timmons added the Salmon Kings fifth goal when Defenseman Nate Forster fired the puck from 200 feet out on Yeats, who again gave up a huge rebound. Timmons was standing on the doorstep and put the puck in the Steelheads wide open net.

The Steelheads out-shot the Salmon Kings 26-13, but Victoria scored five goals, handing Yeats his third loss of the season. Currie earned his third win in five starts for the Salmon Kings.

Victoria converted three of four power-plays while holding the Steelheads ECHL best powerplay unit off the score board all night, suffocating Idaho six times.

The Salmon Kings and Steelheads play the final game of three in Boise tomorrow night, before Victoria travels home on Sunday. The Salmon Kings will then have four practice days before they host the West Division leading Alaska Aces three times at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre before Christmas, starting Friday December 16th.
