Lenes' 12th Goal with Wheeling Defeats Former Club
February 4, 2012 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release
TRENTON, NJ- For the second time this week, Peter Delmas gave the Wheeling Nailers a fantastic performance in goal, and for the second time this week, his teammates rewarded him. Peter Lenes broke a 1-1 tie with 9:23 remaining in the third period, as the Nailers picked up a 2-1 victory at Sun National Bank Center.
The Nailers and Titans battled through two periods of scoreless hockey, thanks to magnificent goaltending by Peter Delmas and Dave Caruso. Finally, at the 47-second mark of the third period, Wheeling broke through. Adam Ross kept the puck alive at the right point, sliding the puck down to Chris Barton, who ultimately hooked up with Paul Crowder. Crowder tossed the puck toward the middle from along the goalline, and got a friendly deflection off of a Trenton body, as the visitors took a 1-0 lead. A little less than three minutes later, the Titans tied the score, as Rob Bordson wristed in a shot from low in the slot.
Midway through the third period, the deadlock was broken for good, but it wasn't that way from the start. Peter Lenes cruised down the left side of the ice, and got Dave Caruso out of his crease, before sliding a low wrist shot toward the cage. On the first look, the puck appeared to hit the right post, but the red light came on behind the net. After the whistle blew to conclude the play, a discussion was had, and the Nailers were awarded the go-ahead goal, as they took a 2-1 lead.
Peter Delmas and the defense kept the score that way, as the Nailers picked up their seventh win in nine head-to-head meetings with Trenton. Delmas stopped 29 of the 30 shots he faced, and helped to lead a perfect 4-for-4 effort on the penalty kill. Dave Caruso took the loss, despite making 21 saves on 23 shots for the Titans.
The Nailers return home to WesBanco Arena on Friday night for a 7:35 face-off against the Toledo Walleye.
