Lexington Legends News Release

Kannapolis, NC- Anchored by a solid pitching platoon performance, the Legends squeezed out a 2-1 win Thursday night. Lexington climbed to 8-15 on the season in one-run games, showing a rare poise through nine innings after a quick Kannapolis score in the bottom of the first.

Mark Fleischer drove in a run on a two-out double to get things started in the bottom of the first. Kannapolis starter Santo Luis flexed his muscle from the mound in his first four innings with seven strikeouts while retiring the first eight of nine batters faced.

Luis was taken aback in the fifth by a leadoff double from Steve Brown, who next took third on a wild pitch. Russell Dixon sent up a sacrifice fly to score Brown before Santo regained his footing and struck out two more Legends.

The Intimidators almost took a lead in the fifth, but those plans were spoiled when John Curtis was thrown out on a relay from left field attempting to tag home on a fly ball. The Legends managed to plant Bryan Brown on third base in the top of the sixth but failed to drive him home.

Lexington starter Jake Leonhardt went six innings strong with three hits, four strikeouts and a single run under his watch. Leonhardt outlasted his counterpart after Luis, who went five innings in his nineteenth game this season. Luis' fifth inning performance lost the team's slim lead and his chances for a decision. Jay Pacella (1-2) came on for the Legends in the seventh and would guide Lexington through the late going.

The Legends ended the eighth inning with a double play on their way to a dramatic ninth. With two outs in the last inning, Russell Dixon hammered in an RBI double to score catcher Max Sapp from first base to grab the lead at 2-1. Russell Dixon was the offensive all-star for the Legends, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI for what would be the go-ahead run in Lexington's first win in four contests.

On the flip side of the frame, Logan Johnson floated a ball to right field for Kannapolis' sixth hit of the day. Flirting with disaster on a payoff pitch, Jay Pacella struck out the last Kannapolis batter with a runner threatening at first for his first win of the year.

Be sure to catch the Legends as they continue their series with Kannapolis Friday night. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
