Shorebirds drop Lakewood

Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Salisbury, Md.- All they can do is take care of their own business and see how the chips fall, but the Birds looked determined to battle to the finish as the final homestand of the first half began victoriously for Delmarva.
Behind Zach Britton's seven shutout innings, the Shorebirds blanked the BlueClaws 6-0. Coming off his roughest start of the year, Britton was back at his best as he struck out a season-high seven batters while allowing just three hits over seven scoreless frames. Reliever Robert Neigebauer turned in another smooth outing as well, throwing the final two innings without surrendering a hit to finish off the shutout for Delmarva. It was the second shutout of the season for Shorebird pitching, the other coming against Greensboro back on May 19.
The offense paved the way for Britton with three runs in the first. Right-fielder Joe Nowicki, who will represent the Shorebirds in the All-Star game in Greensboro on Tuesday, jump-started the attack with a two-run homer, his team-leading tenth dinger of the season. Anthony Martinez and Matt Tucker followed it up with back-to-back doubles, scoring another run that cushioned the Birds to a 3-0 lead after one.
Leading 4-0 in the eighth, Delmarva received a nice piece of insurance when DH Wally Crancer drilled his third home run of the season, another two-run blast that extended the lead even further. With Lake County's 3-2 win against Hagerstown this evening, the Shorebirds title hopes are bleak. Delmarva needs to win their three remaining games, while the Captains must drop their remaining three to Hagerstown. In addition, Greensboro needs to lose at least once against West Virginia. Unlikely, but not impossible.
