Lexington Legends News Release
Lexington starter Corey Ray allowed six hits and two runs in six innings and Anderson Miller and Luis Valenzuela each drove in two runs as the Legends won the opener of a doubleheader 5-2 over the Hagerstown Suns Friday night in Hagerstown.
In the nightcap, three Hagerstown pitchers teamed up to hold the Legends to two hits as the Suns gained a split with a 6-1 victory.
South Atlantic League doubleheader games are seven innings in length.
Miller's two-run double in the first inning of the opening game gave the Legends an early lead, but Hagerstown came back to tie the game with single runs in the second and third.
The Legends took the lead in the fourth when they scored without a hit. With two outs, Samir Duenez was hit by a pitch, and DonAndre Clark drew a walk. Duenez scored when Valenzuela's grounder got past shortstop Osvaldo Abreu for an error.
In the sixth, Clark singled and moved to second on a balk before Valenzuela homered to right field, giving Lexington its final 5-2 margin.
Ray (5-6) got the win. Hagerstown starter Connor Bach (6-4) took the loss.
In the second game, the Legends scored a run in the top of the first inning on a single by Valenzuela and a triple by Chad Johnson, but the Suns took command with five runs in the bottom of the second. Bryan Mejia led off with a single and moved to third on a double by Matt Reistetter. Mejia came home on a single by Wilman Rodriguez, and Reistetter scored on Conor Keniry's base hit as Rodriguez moved to second. Andrew Stevenson bunted for a hit, and when catcher Michael Hill committed a throwing error, Rodriguez scored, Keniry moved to third and Stevenson took second. Keniry came home on a sacrifice fly by Abreu, and Stevenson scored on a triple by Jose Marmalejos-Diaz.
The Suns scored their final run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Keniry.
Johnson's first-inning triple was the only hit allowed by Hagerstown starter Andrew Lee, who worked the first four innings. David Napoli (2-0) worked two hitless innings and got the win. Deion Williams allowed one hit in a scoreless seventh.
Legends starter Colin Rodgers (3-9) was the losing pitcher.
Game three of the four-game series will be played Saturday night. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
