Gnats Flexen After Seventeen Straight

Savannah, GA - The Sand Gnats shut out the Kannapolis Intimidators at Historic Grayson Stadium, 5-0, on Friday night for their seventeenth straight victory. Savannah has won 23 of their last 24 games.

Savannah (35-17/74-48) shortstop Luis Guillorme continued to pace the offense for the Gnats with a single and a run scored in the first frame on Friday. Guillorme stole third and came home on a throwing error by catcher Sean O'Connell.

Kannapolis (24-30/59-64) was shutout by Gnats' starter Chris Flexen (2-0), who tossed 8.0 scoreless innings allowing just four hits with ten strikeouts. Flexen allowed no extra-base hits on the night just two hits apiece to center fielder Louie Lechich and shortstop Toby Thomas. The California native needed 100 pitches to get through all eight innings, his 100th pitch was strike three for his tenth strikeout.

The Gnats added two more runs in the third and DH Michael Katz added a 2-run tape-measure blast in the sixth for insurance. LHP Ben Griset tossed one perfect frame with a strikeout to close the book on the 5-0 shutout.

The Sand Gnats will look for their 18th straight victory tomorrow at Historic Grayson Stadium. The Gnats will send RHP Josh Prevost (4-4, 3.61) to the hill, while the Intimidators will start RHP Kelvis Valerio (1-1, 3.68). There will be a Saturday Night Fireworks spectacular after the game tomorrow with gates opening at 5pm and first pitch is set for 6:05pm.
