Hagerstown Suns News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD - The Hagerstown Suns (27-27, 62-60) split a doubleheader with the Lexington Legends (20-32, 51-71) on Friday night, dropping the first game 5-2, but taking the second game 6-1. The Suns are now 11-6 in doubleheaders this season.
In the first game of the doubleheader Lexington took the lead for good in the fourth inning. With two outs 1B Samir Duenez was hit by a pitch. He moved to second when the next batter, LF DonAndre Clark, drew a walk. Suns shortstop Osvaldo Abreu then committed a fielding error on a bouncer hit his way, allowing Duenez to score all the way from second and break a 2-2 tie.
Lexington had taken a 2-0 lead in the contest in the first when RF Anderson Miller laced a two-out double to right. That brought home both runs in the frame and gave the Legends the early edge. However, Hagerstown struck back with a run each in the second and third. In the second RF Wilman Rodriguez hit an RBI double to center field, bringing home DH Jeff Gardner from third. In the third inning CF Andrew Stevenson scored on a groundout by 1B Jose Marmolejos to knot the score.
The legends padded their lead in the sixth on a two-run homerun by SS Luis Valenzuela. It was his third homerun of the season and wound up setting the final score. Starting RHP Corey Ray (5-6) earned the win for Lexington. He went six innings and gave up two earned runs on six hits and one walk while striking out two. Starting LHP Connor Bach (6-4) suffered the loss for Hagerstown. He threw four innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on three hits and five walks while striking out two. LHP Eric Stout pitched the final inning for the Legends to earn his third save of the year.
In game two of the doubleheader the Suns plated five runs in the bottom of the second inning to cruise to the win. Hagerstown sent all nine hitters to the plate in that second inning, and came away with the five runs on six hits, one walk, and an error. Five of those hits came in a row to start the frame, and four of the six hits were singles, with also one double and one triple in the inning. The inning finally came to a close when 1B Matthew Page lined into an unassisted double play at first.
All five Hagerstown runs in the second were charged to Legends starting LHP Colin Rodgers (3-9), who got tagged with the loss. He lasted just three innings, allowing nine hits and one walk while striking out one. LHP David Napoli (6-4) earned the win in relief for the Suns. He threw two perfect innings while striking out one. RHP Andrew Lee started for Hagerstown and went four innings, allowing one earned run on one hit and two walks while striking out six.
These teams will continue their four-game series at Municipal Stadium with game three on Saturday, August 22. The Suns will send RHP Erick Fedde (0-1) to the mound for his third start and appearance with the Suns this season. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
