Texas Legends News Release
Cedar Park, TX (April 2, 2011) - The Texas Legends refused to be beaten on Saturday night, coming back from down seven points with 24.0 seconds remaining in regulation and eventually going on to take down the Austin Toros 134-128 in double overtime at the Cedar Park Center to advance to the 2011 NBA D-League Playoffs in their inaugural season.
Following a Fort Wayne Mad Ants win earlier in the night, the Legends knew that without a win in Cedar Park their season would come to an end.
However, Texas knocked down multiple huge three-pointers in the final seconds of the fourth quarter and in overtime to get the comeback victory and become just the third expansion team in league history to accomplish the postseason feat.
The Legends will be the eighth seed in the playoffs and will find out who they will play and their first round schedule on Sunday afternoon.
The Toros had six players in double digit scoring and the Legends Joe Alexander recorded his 22nd double-double of the season with 36 points and 15 rebounds.
The Legends jumped out to a six-point lead in the first quarter. They shot 67 percent from the field compared to the Toros 44 percent and were a perfect 5-5 at the free throw line. Danny Green and Kevin Palmer kept the Toros close by combining for 12 first quarter points.
The Toros fought hard in the second quarter improving their shooting percent from the field to 53 percent. The Toros tied the game with a three-pointer by Danny Green and snatched a two-point lead thanks to a hook shot by Leo Lyons. Alexander brought the game to a tie once again with a dunk seconds before the end of the half, bringing the score to 61-61.
The Toros took the lead in the third and two free throw attempts by Marcus Cousin allowed the Toros to take their biggest lead of the game of 9 points. The Legends battled back throughout the quarter and cut the lead to two at the end of the third.
The Legends regained the lead in the fourth thanks to a 9-0 run to start the quarter, but the Toros dug deep and with 6:37 left to play, Carldell "Squeaky" Johnson made a three-pointer that jump started a 13-4 run that lasted until 3:17. With the lead, the Toros entered the last minute of play leading 106-100.
With less than 30 seconds left to play, Booker Woodfox and Justin Dentmon made back-to-back three pointers to bring the Legends within one point of the Toros. Aubrey Coleman stepped up to the free throw line with 15.7 seconds left and made two free throws to extend the Toros lead to three. Joe Alexander made a quick lay up and brought the Toros lead back down to one.
Coleman then made two more free throws to once again extend the Toros lead back to three. With 4.2 seconds on the clock, Rashad McCants hit a three to tie the game at 113. The Toros were unable to convert on their last possession and the game went into overtime.
The Toros struck first in overtime by going on a quick 5-0 run. The Toros held their lead until Sean Williams made two free throws that tied the game with 29.8 seconds left in the extra period. With 9.4 seconds to go in the first overtime, Coleman stepped up and made yet another clutch three pointer to return the lead back to the Toros. That's when Woodfox again with 2.7 seconds on the clock responded with a clutch three of his own, tying the game once again at 121-121 and sending the game into a second overtime.
The Toros started the second extra period by going on a 6-0 run and taking a quick 127-121 lead. The Legends climbed back and cut the Toros lead to two with under a minute to play. Joe Alexander scored five unanswered points and gave the Legends a 130-127 lead with a little over 17 seconds left. Williams and Woodfox added four late free throws and sealed the Legends victory over the Toros, 134-128.
Rashad McCants scored a season-high 28 points, while Sean Williams added 19 points and 11 boards.
Coleman (30) and Leo Lyons (24), who also grabbed ten rebounds and recorded a double-double, led the Toros in scoring. San Antonio Spurs assignee Danny Green played 32 minutes in his first game with the Toros contributing 19 points and seven rebounds.
