Asheville Tourists News Release
ASHEVILLE-- Ofreidy Gomez entered Tuesday night's game with a 1-6 record for the Lexington Legends. The right-handed pitcher found his groove early and took advantage of an Asheville Tourists team that has struggled to score runs at home. Gomez and the Legends went on to win 5-2.
The Tourists did manage 11 hits in the game although they were scattered throughout the nine innings. Asheville also bounced into a pair of rally killing double-plays. Lexington plated four of their five runs off Antonio Santos; who allowed three runs or more in his fifth consecutive start.
Marten Gasparini, Khalil Lee, and Rudy Marten all tallied three hits for the Legends. Asheville was led offensively by Colton Welker's 3-for-4 performance. Eric Toole and Manny Melendez each recorded a pair of hits.
The Legends took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third. The Tourists plated one in the bottom of the third, but it was the only run they could manage against Gomez in seven innings. After Lexington scored two more in the fourth, Asheville tried to play come-from-behind the rest of the way.
In the bottom of the eighth, Vince Fernandez doubled in a run to make it 4-2. Asheville had runners at second and third but Vance Tatum struck out Willie Abreu to end the threat. The Legends added an insurance run in the ninth.
Wednesday night will feature the same two teams in the series finale. The Legends will go for a sweep while the Tourists will attempt to snap a six-game home losing streak.
