CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charleston RiverDogs' partnership with the Charleston County School District (CCSD) will culminate on Wednesday morning as the club recognizes the winning Lowcountry second grade classes of the "Reading Around the Bases" program supporting literacy in CCSD partnering schools.

Seven of the 17 winning second grade classes that pored through the most pages will be honored as the RiverDogs welcome over 5,000 local students and their chaperones to an 11:05am ballgame at Joe Riley Park.

"Congratulations to all of the classes that participated in this program, and especially to our winning second grade students," said RiverDogs President and General Manager Dave Echols. "Education Days always bring a great energy to the ballpark and this year we are especially excited to recognize the top students from the first year of our new reading program."

"The Reading Around the Bases competition brought out the best in our second-grade scholars throughout the district," said Christy James, CCSD's Library and Media Services Specialist. "So many of them were motivated to help their classes win. More importantly, our students grew when it came to literacy, and opened doors to new opportunities through this program. We can't wait to do it again next year, hopefully with a larger number of schools participating."

Among the "Reading Around the Bases" winners, Kristen Williman's AC Corcoran Elementary class, Lisa Shellhaas' Jennie Moore Elementary class, Susan Sajdak and Mary Collins' Lambs Elementary group, NC Creative Arts Elementary grade two students led by Cassandra Krause, Ashley Sutton's class from Ladson Elementary, Elizabeth Livingston's Whitesides Elementary group, and Sullivan's Island's Deborah Palmer grade two students, will all be recognized.

To encourage and improve literacy in the local community, the Charleston RiverDogs and CCSD teamed up for the 12-week baseball-themed incentive program. Each student received a Reading Challenge packet that includes a score card, tracking sheet, and their very own personal baseball card. To move around the bases on the score card, a student must have read a certain number of pages: 100 pages for a single, 200 pages for a double, 300 pages for a triple, and 500 pages for home run. Students also earn points for their class depending on how far they advance on the score card.

During the program, special guests from the RiverDogs visited schools in the district to provide encouragement, fun, and serve as volunteer readers with second grade classes each month leading up to the season.
