Hagerstown Suns News Release
HAGERSTOWN, Md. - Suns center fielder Blake Perkins kick-started a comeback with his two-run single in the fourth, but Hagerstown (30-20) fell short, 8-4, during a Memorial Day defeat against the Delmarva Shorebirds (20-29) at Municipal Stadium.
Delmarva grabbed a 4-0 lead in the fourth after a two-out error kept the inning going against Hagerstown starter Carlos Pena (Loss, 3-3). Following two walks, Delmarva RBI-leader Jake Ring pulled a double down the right field line to tag Pena with three unearned runs.
Ring leads the South Atlantic League with 17 doubles, one better than Suns first baseman Aldrem Corredor, who slammed a double of his own off the wall in center field before the Suns left the bases loaded in the opening frame.
Pena left after 1 2/3 innings and handed the baton to Yonthan Ramirez, who allowed one earned run in 4 1/3 innings of relief work. Delmarva starter Zach Muckenhirn (Win 2-5) allowed just two earned runs.
The Suns rattled off four-straight runs in the middle innings to make things interesting. After Daniel Johnson was hit by a pitch from Kory Groves, Jake Noll notched a double, Nick Banks tallied an RBI groundout, and Noll scored on a wild pitch to cut the Delmarva lead to 6-4.
Hagerstown never got closer and Preston Palmeiro, son of former Major League slugger Rafael Palmeiro, launched a 401-foot homer over the visiting bullpen in right-center field to put the game out of reach in the top of the ninth.
The Suns are 0-11 this season when trailing after eight complete innings but remain in first place atop the SAL Northern Division, a half-game ahead of the Lakewood BlueClaws (30-21).
On Tuesday at 7:05 p.m., Suns lefty Tyler Watson (4-1, 3.42) draws the start against Delmarva righty Matthias Dietz (0-4, 5.62). It's an Eats-for-Seats Night at Municipal Stadium with any canned food donation at the stadium gate good for $2 off any ticket.
The weeklong homestand continues on Thursday, June 1 at 7:05 p.m. when Tim Tebow and the Columbia Fireflies begin their four-game series in Hagerstown. For tickets, call 301-791-6266 or visit hagerstownsuns.com.
