Lexington Legends News Release
(WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK, Lexington, Ky.) The Lexington Legends took the lead with three runs in the sixth inning and held on for a 6-5 win over the Augusta GreenJackets Monday night.
The Legends took an early 2-0 lead. They scored a run in the first inning on a leadoff single by Alfredo Escalera, a wild pitch, a single by Frank Schwindel and a sacrifice fly by Mauricio Ramos. In the second, Chad Johnson led off with a single and moved to third when a ground ball hit by Humberto Arteaga got past shortstop Rando Moreno for an error. Johnson scored as Carlos Garcia grounded into a double play.
Augusta claimed the lead with three runs in the third. Consecutive singles by Gabriel Cornier, Moreno and Chris Lofton loaded the bases with no outs. Ryder Jones doubled to right field, scoring Cornier and Moreno to tie the game. Lofton came home with the go-ahead run when pitcher Andrew Edwards committed an error while trying to field a ground ball hit by Tyler Horan.
Jeremy Sy hit a solo homer for Augusta in the top of the fifth, but Escalera homered for Lexington in the bottom of the fifth, leaving Augusta in front 4-3.
The Legends tied the game at 4-4 when Schwindel led off the bottom of the sixth with his team-leading 12th home run of the year. Ramos followed with a single, and Fred Ford walked. After Johnson struck out when he bunted foul on the third strike, Arteaga hit a grounder back to pitcher Carlos Diaz. Diaz threw to Moreno for a force at second base, but Moreno threw past first for an error. Ramos scored the tie-breaking run, and Arteaga advanced to second. Carlos Garcia's single to center field scored Arteaga, and the Legends had a 6-4 lead.
Eric Sim's solo homer with one out in the eighth inning brought Augusta back to within a run at 6-5, but reliever Jose Rodriguez entered the game and got the final five outs for his fifth save.
Matt Alvarez (3-2), who relieved starter Andrew Edwards at the start of the fifth inning, worked three and one-third innings and picked up the win.
Diaz (4-6), the Augusta starter, was the losing pitcher.
The Legends took three out of four over Augusta and will remain at home to open a three-game series against Greensboro Tuesday night. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
