KANNAPOLIS, NC - The Charleston RiverDogs grabbed an early 1-0 lead on a second-inning single by Gosuke Katoh, but three RiverDogs errors and a long outing from Kannapolis' James Dykstra boosted the Intimidators to a 4-2 win on Monday evening and a four-game sweep at CMC-NorthEast Stadium in South Atlantic League action.
The RiverDogs are 3-9 in the second half and 36-46 overall. The Intimidators are now 9-3 and 38-41, respectively. Kannapolis also wins an eight-game season series by a 7-1 final mark.
Charleston scored the game's first run during the top of the second inning. Miguel Andujar led off with a single against Dykstra and advanced to second base on a groundout by Eduardo de Oleo. Katoh singled to bring in Andujar for a 1-0 RiverDogs lead.
In the third, Kannapolis had two runners thrown out at home plate before pushing across two runs for a 2-1 advantage. Carl Thomore and Nolan Earley were put out on fielder's choices for the first two outs of the frame. However, Christian Stringer reached due to an error that allowed Tyler Williams to score the tying run. The next batter, Trey Michalczewski, drove in Cleuluis Rondon with a go-ahead single off Charleston's Chaz Hebert that put Kannapolis in front.
Another error helped the Intimidators increase their lead to 3-1 in the fourth inning. Jacob Morris got on base after a fielding error and went to third base during a Brett Austin single. Morris scored on a double play from Thomore.
Dykstra lasted a career-high 7.2 innings in the win. He struck out eight and stranded multiple runners in scoring position during the fourth and seventh innings. Dykstra left during the eighth after back-to-back two-out singles before Dylan Chavez finished a scoreless frame for him.
Michalczewski added an inside-the-park home run off Charleston's Brett Gerritse in the bottom of the eighth. Michalczewski raced around the bases after a high fly ball to right-center field, sliding in at home plate for his seventh home run of the year to put Kannapolis up 4-1.
During the ninth inning, Charleston managed just one run in a late comeback effort. John Murphy got into scoring position with a one-out double and scored after a two-out single by Tyler Wade to cut the deficit to 4-2. Chavez replied with a game-ending strikeout to seal the four-game sweep.
In his third straight win, Dykstra improved to 6-6 for the Intimidators. Hebert fell back to 0-2 with the loss. Chavez earned his first professional save by closing the contest.
