Asheville Tourists News Release
Asheville, NC--On Monday night the Asheville Tourists suffered their worst loss of the season.
They fell at the hands of the Greensboro Grasshoppers to a tune of 20-2. Asheville allowed a season-high in runs (20), a season-high in hits (21), and committed a season-high five errors in the loss.
The Grasshoppers jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first half inning on five hits and a walk.
They made it 12-0 with seven more in the second. Andrew Brown started for the Tourists and was taken out midway through the second inning. Brown allowed 10 runs but only four of them were earned. Asheville committed three of their five errors in the first two frames.
The Tourists did manage an unearned run of their own in the bottom of the second, but Kentrell DeWitt's two-run homer to right made it a 14-1 after three. With the game already out of reach, Raimel Tapia singled home Emerson Jimenez in the fifth inning. Troy Neiman and Jefri Hernandez combined to pitch three effective innings in relief, but that only took the game to the seventh.
Starting the top of the seventh down 15-2, Fred Ocasio decided not to waste any more of his bullpen. He brought infielder Alec Mehrten in to pitch, and Mehrten did well. The right-hander lasted two innings, allowed three hits and only one run; a solo blast by JT Riddle. Ocasio continued the trend by going with catcher Ashley Graeter to pitch the ninth. Greensboro scored four runs off Graeter; however, all four runs were unearned.
Riddle finished with five hits and a triple shy of the cycle. Felix Munoz had four hits for the visitors, and Austin Dean ended up with a game-high four RBI.
For the Tourists, Tapia ended up 3-for-4 while Jordan Patterson and David Dahl each had two hits. The loss runs Asheville's home-losing streak to three games; the highest it's been all season.
